I was recently thinking what would happen if I am out on the field bushogging and my tractor (NH 3930) or bush hog were to catch on fire. The answer is it would burn up because I would have no way to put it out. It would probably be wise to get a fire extinguisher for the tractor. I could mount it on the ROPS bracket.

Does anyone have an extinguisher on their tractor? What size/type extinguisher did you get and where did you get it and how much did it cost? Where and how did you mount it to the tractor? Have you ever had to use it?

Thanks

I carry a 5 lb abc extinguisher in my cab, I think it's a 3a 40bc.
It was around $50 when I bought it, but prices are all over the page. Never needed one on my tractor, but I prefer being prepared.
From previous experiences with firefighting, they are fine for putting out small fires if caught soon enough.

I also have an ABC in my cab. It came with a mounting bracket. Bought at local box store, don't remember the price. Never had to use it but better safe than sorry.

You can't beat a can if there's room for it !!!
I keep one in my house and garage, but not on the tractor.

I have one, need to get a better mount for it though. Now it just sits in my little toolbox. I was looking at it the other day and had noticed mud daubers filled the nozzle on it with mud. Keep an eye on your nozzle, doubt it will work very well clogged full of mud.

Big thing is to not be like most people, me included, mount it and forget it or ever check it beyond walking by it. I have had two, one in the house and one in the garage, that the gauge was showing proper pressure but when tried to use them nothing came out. The powder had apparently packed or solidified to the point nothing would come out. Don't know if it helps but I now at least try to flip em', shake em' a little every now and again.

I would image that about 90% of the ABC extinguishers are settled and useless.........Just guessing.???:unsure::unsure:

Built custom mounts for both tractors - each has a 5lb extinguisher riding on a fender.

I have a 6kg/13 lbs one in the tractor all the time. It sits behind the seat, so it doesn't get in the way and that's the main reason I have it with me all the time.

Technically, we're only required to have them, if fire risk is too high.

My last tractor had an extinguisher on the roll bar, the mounting bracket attached with duct tape. Somehow I never thought about putting one on the tractor I have now.

I’ll have to check the size, but I do have one on my port-side fender, right within reach.

I paid $35 for it, ABC rated.

Never had to use mine, BUT

the guy who does my hay, as well as a dairy op I used to work for, both had tractor fires. One was a 7410 JD, the other was a 6420. First one was baling hay down the road, caught fire, extinguished it, continued baling and then it reignited- burned the tractor to a husk.

Second was a TMR tractor that had a return line leak that caught, tractor burned down, mixer was burnt bad and a 500 cow barn was lost as well.

my advice, if I may…

Make certain your extinguisher is charged. If in doubt, throw it out- 40 bucks vs a 40 grand tractor- math seems easy to me.

If you have a fire, extinguish it, then DO NOT operate the tractor until the root cause is found.

Don’t even drive back to the barn, tow it if you have to.

A leaky tractor is a risky tractor. Fix them leaks.

Blow everything out in dusty conditions, every day.

Be sure you get the engine compartment, exhaust system, and radiator.

I keep an extinguisher in the bed of my truck next to the tailgate also.
For the life of me I don’t know why vehicles don’t come with them standard.

Hope that helps!

That's why before using a handheld dry chemical extinguisher you invert it and knock it on something solid.

The very first thing that I added to my tractor was a fire extinguisher.

I have a 1kg ABE dry chem mounted on my ROPS, right side above the 'indicator'. I used two circular metal screw bands/clamps (hose clamps) to attach the mounting bracket to the ROPS, using a 'cut-up' foam-neoprene stubie-holder (I think that you'd call them a 'koozie') to insulate (anti-vibration) between the clamp & the ROPS.

VERY good advise from Antiqueiron.

It's better to have and not need one than to need one and not have.

I have two extinguishers in my house, one on the tractor, one in my ute, one in my workshop and a 5kg in my 5-bay shed. Cheap insurance.

Ask your local fire brigade/department if they can 'run you through' on how to operate and actually put out a fire, too.

For sure. I just picked up another one at an auction for my house garage.

My extinguisher is a 4lb.

Running out of space to mount things, I had to go onto a section of 45 degree ROPS. I used some plastic lumber 2x4 as spacers to offset the mount, to achieve the necessary clearance.

I too am a proponent of inverting the extinguisher and bopping it on something hard, from time to time (a couple of times a year).

I have a 5# ABC on each tractor. The mount is zip tied to the ROPS.

I have had equipment catch fire on me before so i am fire paranoid. I have a 5 lb Amerex 3A:40B:C on my Massey. It is on the fender between the loader valve and the fender. There are 5 lb extinguishers that are 2A:10B:C out there, the more effective one is often not much more money. I put two 2.5lb units on a skidsteer as I did not have room for a 5lb unit. Department of Transportation requires a 5B:C extinguisher as part of the annual inspection which I think is a little small.

I just got a new tractor, and am looking on where I can mount an extinguisher. I would like a 10 lb, but will probably settle for a 5lb as the cab is cramped.

If you look at commercial buildings, most have Buckeye or Amerex, very rarely do you see First Alert or Kidde. If you want some fun reading read about Kidde and their denial of issues and the resulting lawsuits.
