And the problem was?
The wiring harness I got off ebay ended up being the problem. The 2 wires that go onto the alternator came with the terminal ends already on them. one was a ring connector and the other was a slide on connector which was the way the old harness was , well the connectors on the ends should have been the opposite of what they were, changed the ends and put on alternator and it has not tripped the circuit breaker since then and I used it mowing for over 30 minutes so I think everything is good. don't know if it was made late friday afternoon or if some applications might use a different setup. Thanks to all for suggestions as what to look for

Out of curiosity, why did you need an eBay engine harness to begin with?

The old wiring harness was nothing but bare wires, I don't know if the mice chewed all covering off or if just old age deuteriation but none of the wires had any covering on them.
