@RSKY, check out Letric Ebikes. They make a trike that will help with the balance issues! Right now, it is about $1500. I've got 2 step through for me and the DW. A 1.0 for her and a 3.0 for me. The 3.0 is more powerful, and she wouldn't feel comfortable on one. The PAS ( pedal assist) helps me with inclines since I've got metal in the lower back! Wouldn't be able to ride a bike without the help. Standard bikes would put a lot of strain on my lower back! Happy riding!

Most e bikes won’t do 30 mph unless it’s downhill. I average somewhere between 12 and 13 mph on my bike rides.

The combination of rear wheel gear cluster and front sprocket on my bike requires too high a pedal cadence for me to keep up at even 25 mph. I could work on my own cadence, but why? I don't like to work that hard when out for pleasure.
Also, I've got the controller programmed to taper off to Zero Pedal assist at 28mph.
For me, that speed is FAST on a bicycle.

I was getting all exited researching different brands/types of E-bikes and dreaming of all the places I could travel to on one. Then my wife uh,...pulled the plug on my dream. "You are seventy years old, have an artificial knee, inner ear and balance problems, and always try to do things like you were fifteen! You don't need a thirty mph electric bike! Cause I know the second day you had it you would be out with the neighborhood teenagers seeing how fast you could go around corners!" Not her exact words but close enough.

Checking on local parachute clubs. I'll show her who's old!

One of the guys in my mountain bike riding group is 80. He wasn't an athlete before taking up riding at age 75. He only recently got an E bike.

Wife also started going over all the mishaps neighbors and I have had in the last twenty years. I have to admit that there have been several although there have been no broken bones or more than a cup or two of blood lost. Oh yeah, and I did burn most of a shirt sleeve off and all the hair off my right arm. And my "hairdresser" has trimmed my hair once to even out where some had been burned off one side of my head.

In my defense most of the 'events' were not my fault.

I may still end up getting an E-bike. When I would ride it seems to be a concern. We babysit a soon to be 15-month old granddaughter two to four days a week and that takes a lot of time and effort. Thinking up 'Granddaddy Adventures' every day is tiring. I did mention putting a carrier on an E-bike and hauling her around but the 37-year old daughter put a stop to that.

Anyway, time will tell. And remember it's easier to get forgiveness than permission.

Don't let that deter you. I'm 87 (as of July)and now have 14 thousand km on my mountain bike. Ive probably done another 1 thousand ks on other bikes. We have another 87 year old in the group and another who has just given up, a month before his 90th birthday.
Most of my riding has been on regular trails with mountain bike trails every couple of months. this Sunday's ride is the Forest Loop at Rotorua. Thirty five ks around the Rotorua mountain bike park. we usually stick to Grade 2 or 3. I have never been one foe exercise and drove a desk for most of my corporate life.

I'm in my late 70's now with two hip replacements. A few years back, I found I was no longer able to ride very far on my standard bike. In my younger years, I rode my bike all over, and it was very disappointing to have to give it up.

E-bikes have been a godsend for me. I can now ride farther and stay out longer than ever before. They also relieve some of the anxiety of not being able to get home if a medical issue should occur. I find that an e-bike isn't much different than a standard one. You can get as little or as much exercise as you want by simply adjusting the assist level.

If you can ride a regular bike, there is no reason why you can't switch to an e-bike.

I went with a mid-drive motor and love how it handles hills—feels more balanced than hub motors. Battery range depends a lot on pedal assist level and terrain, so test both.

I’m the OP and still riding. I’ve got about 6400 miles on mine. I’ve slowed down not because I wanted to but other projects come up. For example I rode very little this last fall, winter and early spring because I did a lot of firewood.

Last year we went to the high trestle trail in Iowa.

We also hauled them to Gulf Shores last fall.

I've road and walked across that bridge dozens of times. Well worth the trip. Amazing views and bridge construction.

That looks like a nice ride. I need to get a rack that can hold the weight of two bikes. Wife and I both enjoy the Ebikes. My knees are not what they once were so I really enjoy being able to go out and ride without it becoming a grind. With all the work we get on the farm, I'm not looking for another workout, just the relaxation that comes from moving by bike.
