We may have a buyer for our JD 420/wide front. He is a collector. The rubber is excellent, it starts easily and runs well, does not burn oil. PTO brake does not work but the PTO does (2 stage clutch). The ignition needs work; it does not charge. It has Factory Power Steering. The tin is all there and not rusted or dented. Tractor has been stored inside for the last 25 years. Has front and back wheel weights and a big front weight. Has been used to mow lawns for the last 25 years. What is a fair price? I am thinking $2K.

I just looked on tractor house and was amazed at prices for a 420. Might want to look at that site as a point of reference.

I'd be thinking in the $4k - $5k range.

I'm in the $5K range. The 420 could have the wheels set out very wide, it's just the right size, every part still available - but it was the optional power steering that sold me. That, plus the wheel weights.
They just don't make a better small tractor. Someone is going to get a heck of a deal.

Well, I may have to get my '56 420C running again. I hate the thought of installing parts in the rear end though. It needs steering clutches or brakes or whatever they're called.

OP, since a picture is worth a thousand words, post up some pictures from all angles. That will allow viewers to give you a better idea of what it might be worth, to the right buyer. Another factor is how long do you want to have it listed ? How willing are you to answer a lot of questions from tire kickers ? If you are looking for top dollar, that will weed out 95 % of the buyers, or possible folks that would fix all the issues properly and then try and flip it.

Problem we had with the 420 was no live PTO so when hauling manure it was sometimes a challenge to get PTO started while trying to drive through the field if load was against the beaters.

There were a lot of options available on the JD420/JD430. Those were only made for a couple of years right as JD was about to switch away from that old "....everything JD has to have (only) two cylinders" designs they had been making since their beginning.

Heavily built, and with a ton of options - like the Pwr Steering. I thought that they had an independent PTO as an option; I know the rest of the line did. Anyone know for sure?

One thing for sure, they had a lot of cast parts everywhere. Even cast wheels. Lots of weight down low and wide on a 20 hp tractor.

We still have our JD530 extra wide version, so I'm a bit biased. Runs fine. I like the slanted steering wheel on that model. Someday hope to have a JD330.

This one has two-stage clutch so essentially "live" PTO power.
Mine had single clutch, so added an over-running stub to the PTO. That allowed for stopping the tractor without also having to stop the PTO.

In running condition, $5-6 k
