Well you shouldn't ever have to run your generator overnight. All you need is a very basic amount of battery charge to keep a fridge and freezer going overnight. (assuming a woodstove for heat).I think if I was going to have a year-round off-grid setup, I'd want to stick a generator house a ways from the house and run a big cable. I just can't stand motor noises at night.
