Is the Cyber Truck a Flop?

/ Is the Cyber Truck a Flop? #441
End of the article:

"After everything was said and done, we sold the remains of our Cybertruck to online auction site Copart for — deep breath — $8,000.
But, hey, at least our ill-fated Fisker Ocean is no longer No. 1 on the "cars on which we've taken the biggest bath" leaderboard."
My bet is any $100K vehicle that has that kind of damage will have a massive repair bill and will be totaled.
Hopefully the dude had gap insurance if he had a loan.

Things are undoubtedly bad at Tesla. Its sales are dwindling. Its profits are plunging, as is its share price. There are regular protests outside its showrooms. The Cybertruck is a flop. And somehow, it’s actually a lot worse than that.
Tesla is fine. Quit listening to the fake news.
Tesla makes the best EV in the world.

Yea, that was from the article, not my words.

I do think margins and sales are shrinking and the Cyber Truck wasn't a very good idea, but Elon liked it. I'm sure you're right about them making the best EV, for now anyway.

I wish the Cybertruck wasn't so polarizing. My wife hates the look and said she couldn't stand looking at it in our driveway if I bought one.
And I really hope other EV brands become better than Tesla. I would like to have more options but right now Tesla EV tech can't be beat.

Basically the cyber truck design is (putting it kindly) way ahead of its time. So much so that most people reject the design even though they like the idea of an electric truck with an indestructible body and 300 plus mile range. Its a marketing flop because buyers generally won't accept the look of it. That's my initial impression and still is - It's ugly yes, but the big thing is it doesn't look anything like your neighbors truck. And even though that was the designers intention, it was a bad idea or maybe they just went too far?

I test drove a CT about 2 months ago for 3 hours. I really liked the drive aspect. I think that part is a homerun.

I think the Cybertruck concept is ahead of its time. However Tesla not only failed to deliver on their concept, but also failed to fix several minor issues in the jump from their concept vehicle to the production vehicle. Things it turns out pickup users actually care about. It's like the Tesla engineers only looked at a pickup spec sheet and never actually used a pickup truck at all.

Combine those failures with eye-wateringly high prices and the Cybertruck ended up competing in an entirely different market than originally expected. The luxury truck market really cares about perception and having utilitarian styling doesn't normally get you the necessary perception.

Your kindness has extended to lying to yourself, scootr! :ROFLMAO: Saying it’s ahead of its time is implying anything will look like that in the future.

The closest those cosmetics will ever be to mainstream is actually in our past, when a bunch of teenage boys wanted the Delorean from Back to the Future, ca.1986.

A bloated stainless steel box will never have widespread appeal.

Tesla… also failed to fix several minor issues in the jump from their concept vehicle to the production vehicle. Things it turns out pickup users actually care about.
Short of the wheels themselves falling off, I can’t imagine a more “major” problem than trailer hitches falling off of tow vehicles. I would never characterize that problem as minor.

It sounds like I’m bashing on the CT, I guess because I see what it could have been, and it’s frustrating to see such a horrendously bad execution of such a wonderful idea. Hopefully one of the big 3 will finally get it right, a BEV or PHEV pickup that actually works as a pickup truck, doesn’t look like something designed by a 14 year old sci fi fanatic in the mid-1980’s, and can actually be used to safely tow trailers.

To be clear, I'm not suggesting anybody like it or buy one. I don't and I wouldn't.
No telling what the cars of 50 yrs future will look like, if we still have cars. And who thinks an electric anything should be a tow vehicle? Hmm? That's just crazy talk.
I can't imagine towing more than a home depot trailer and then only for short distances... no, it was a bad idea that would shock nobody if it tanked. Same is true for the Ford lightning.
Then again I can it used by a certain click of folks to go camping or used for an activity where you have to haul some gear. Hiking, biking, etc A trip to HD for a faucet :p
Again I'm not buying one...

Have you seen the BYDs? I have not personally, but the videos are showing a superior product. BYD just made the largest Car Transport Ship in the world. BYD is going to own this EV revolution. Testa will be a foot note in history, when it files for bankruptcy and closes shop in three years, and all the fan boys will wonder what just happened. :)

Write that down, date it, and put it in a safe place. ;)

It'd work well for me, since I'm generally doing shorter distances when towing heavy. I know it's less ideal for those covering longer distances in Wyoming or Texas.

I do longer distances with my boat trailers, but they're all light enough to not create any major range anxiety concerns. My heavier trailer is really only used for firewood, topsoil, and moving tractors... all local stuff.

All I know is towing anything quickly ramps up the amperage draw and can leave 'out of gas' surprisingly fast.
It would be good if there were some real world towing stats. We all read 320-350 range est. Assuming that is like the MPG ratings none of ever got ...
It would be good to see a standardized towing test showing the range at the 50% and 100% capacity towing, even if it was slightly downhill with a tailwind ;)
Edit. Google rarely disappoints ~ Generally, the Cyber Truck can tow a 7,500-pound travel trailer for about 115 miles using 75% of the battery, or up to 135 miles if using 100% of the battery.
And we all know you should never use a 100% of a lithium battery. More like 80% if you want it to last years and years. Other challenges would include being able to charge where you load and unload if doing the maximum tow thing.

It's for commute within range. Calling iit a truck is abuse or the word Truck.
I have seen it raise the air shocks with a heavy pallet but to do that daily as a landscape contractor. No!
How durable is the door for the beds secret compartment. Not a truck in the sense of the word. The roll up bed cover couldn't survive long. Not practical for work. Maybe hauling briefcases.
If you like it buy it.
A truck is for work.
Today's 1/2ton trucks are used as light grocery getters. Not all of them.
Growing pains of ev's.
Wonder if musk is reading this. He should be!
Trump owns him now. NO DAYS OFF! :ROFLMAO:
What you say mr musk?

Soon the HOA's will start banning all C.T.'s:eek:

While the article didn't say what hit it other than a "compact sedan", seems kind of pitiful that something like that could do that kind of damage to what's touted as a rugged vehicle.

Except for all the others. :poop:

Body repair costs are high.
If the CT warranty runs out how many will be pushed out of commission because of the cost of a new battery.
A lot of solid modern cars go to scrap because of a bad engine and labor cost..
What's the life expectancy?

C.T. Battery cost
The cost of a full battery replacement for a Cybertruck can vary, but a range of $19,369 is mentioned for a new Long Range Model 3, and a $16,000 range extender has been announced for the Cybertruck

I wouldn't trust anything the Chinese state about their products. Chinese lie and steal.
