I see LouNY already mentioned Edison Motors, easily the most entertaining corner of the EV development world, but there's also the new Dodge RamCharger.It might. But those who have tried have all failed on automobile sized systems.
Locomotives, earth movers, ships, are another story.
I believe you, when you say that achieving efficiency in a series hybrid is going to be a matter of scale. But I'll also argue that changes in the technologies involved will serve to move the threshold, in terms of where that economy of scale becomes practical. If it was locomotives in the past, and semi trucks today, it's reasonable to think pickup trucks are the next frontier for a practical series hybrid.
