My guess is It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World had more stars in it than any movie in history.

I watched Horizon, An American Saga a couple of nights ago. I heard it didn’t do well in theaters. I can see why. It was OK but he should have stuck with the Yellowstone show.

Garden State… Zach Braff wrote, directed and stars in his first movie… it’s not for everyone, lots of dry humor, sight gags and classic faux pas (Amway sales anyone?)… I find it entertaining enough that it’s on our list of movies we watch “frequently” (every one or two years)…

I bought this movie on a whim as the DVD cover featured Zach, Natalie and, more importantly, a green Dnepr MT 16 sidecar… which was “close enough” to the Ural hack in my avatar…😍

Wikipedia lists 12 big name stars in mad, mad world, quite a few for a comedy. It was one of the first movies I saw in the theater.
One of my other favorite movies, "How the West Was Won" has 22 listed big name stars, plus narration by Spencer Tracy.
Hollyweird just doesn't make the classics like they used to!

Sometimes, I like to watch a movie with no redeeming social values, just a dumb comedy, like "The Stupids".

Part is the cost.
They all made good money for the day but not the amounts now made.
A favorite of mine is American Graffiti.
They say that just the rights to the sound track would eat the entire budget converted into today's money.

Watching "Wheel of Time" series on Amazon Prime. Very good video adaptation of Robert Jordan's books.

Watched the Sacketts on you tube last night. A Louis Lamour tale made for TV movie with Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot.
Pretty good but typical Lamour story with no ending...I know I have read them all.

A couple of weeks ago I watched Generation War. It’s a 3 part mini series, about 4 1/2 hours total. It’s a ww2 flick and it’s made in Germany, and if you hate subtitles don’t watch. It was one of those surprise movies and better than I expected. It’s also a little grim but it should be based on the subject matter. I saw it on Amazon Prime.

Generation War is somewhat of a different movie. It does not focus on the glory of war or how much smarter people become when they consume alcohol or drugs.

"The movie "Generation War" (original German title: "Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter") is a German miniseries that tells the story of five close friends in Berlin during World War II. It follows their diverging paths and experiences on the Eastern Front, in nursing, and within the Jewish community, exploring themes of personal responsibility, complicity, and the impact of the war on ordinary Germans. The series is notable for its portrayal of German experiences and perspectives during the war, while also prompting discussions about historical accuracy and moral ambiguity.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Five Friends, Five Perspectives:
The film focuses on five young friends from Berlin whose lives are dramatically changed by the war. These characters represent a cross-section of German society, including soldiers, a nurse, and a Jewish individual.

  • Eastern Front Focus:
A significant portion of the narrative takes place on the Eastern Front, where German soldiers engaged in some of the war's most brutal combat.

  • Personal Responsibility and Complicity:
The series delves into the moral complexities faced by ordinary Germans during the war, exploring their individual choices and the consequences of those choices.

  • German Perspective:
"Generation War" offers a German perspective on World War II, which has sparked both praise and criticism for its portrayal of events and characters.

  • Controversial Reception:
The series has been both praised for its emotional impact and criticized for its historical interpretations, particularly regarding the portrayal of German actions and the depiction of other nationalities according to critics."

I thought the movie was pretty accurate in terms of being reasonably historically correct. It didn’t pull any punches.

Going to check it out, thanks. I’ve been catching up on a few classics and recent releases over on hbo max . Some films I skipped in theaters ended up being gems on rewatch. What’s nice is their mix of blockbusters and smaller, artsy flicks—it keeps movie nights from feeling repetitive.

50 years late is better than never! (y)

I love all those old Eastwood westerns. Josey Wales, Pale Rider, For a Few Dollars More... but I'd guess it's debatable whether they're "good movies" in some regards. They're infinitely enjoyable, but there sure are a lot of holes in plot and historical accuracy.

Of course, there's the mother of them all, "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". IMO, that one really set the type for all the rest, and really is an objectively good movie.

"Good" might have to be defined by the audience. I was just talking about an older animated film called Leap with my daughter, it was her favorite movie when she was little, and it is quite good. I wouldn't watch it alone as an adult, but it was a great movie to watch with kids.

On the far end of the spectrum is Deliverance, which many hold up as a "great movie", but I never want to watch that one again. :p

Speaking of westerns, I think Kurt Russell's Tombstone has to be one of the best westerns ever made, for a very good mix of historical accuracy, set and scene, script, acting... that one sort of hit the perfect compromise of all factors, for me. Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday was so different, and so perfect, in that movie. The more you read about Wyatt Earp's story, the more you realize how every part of the script of that movie was based on true history, rather than dramatization.

Then again, Clint was a better "tough guy" than Kurt Russell, every day. :D

Yep. And even that final bit of the movie, the "Vendetta Ride", actually happened. I think the only major plot point of that movie which was totally made up was the final gun fight between Doc and Ringo. More of their creative license was in the area of time compression, just to make the story fit into a 90 minute movie.
