Colorado wolf reintroduction

I wonder sometimes about animals being afraid of humans due to hunting. But with wolves I can understand it. Wolves are smart. At the University of Washington a study was done with crows. People put on masks that were unique and trapped crows while wearing the masks. While in captivity the crows were fed and so on. People who fed the crows and treated them nice wore one mask and people who trapped and treated them not so nicely wore a different mask. I wouldn't be at all surprised if wolves, coyotes, and bears can disseminate knowledge of threats that span generations. In the case of the Seattle crows they have done so for at least 17 years. Here is a link that explains the study way better than I just did, and there are many more: Crows hold grudges against individual humans for up to 17 years | Urban@UW

I have seen that research study and use it in class. Its know wolves teach their young. That's how some wolf packs become specialized hunters. I think the thing that would separate them form the crows is life span. The average wolf only really has a few years and crows can live much longer. That's a longer life to accumulate and teach. Wolves can send off their young in a year or 2. Crows may parent for 5 years.

Related to this topic in a way because we brought it up...

I'm starting a new thread on BLM land actions going on in court. Think it might be an interesting topic.

The state has opened a season on these animals to reduce their numbers. It needs to be done. I doubt any of the hunters who harvest one will be eating them. Can't remember the last time I ever read of cat being on the menu.

It's okay, you don't need to understand it.
You're correct, I don't need to understand it.

cats are very good to eat whether it’s a bob or a cougars, making a mount with it complicated things if one want to eat eat it i must admit but still doable.

Woodchucks are hunted because of their destructive habits. And generally not eaten after being harvested.

This is part of the wolf debate. If a wolf looked like an opossum or a woodchuck, yet killed like a wolf, nobody would complain about hunting them.

Because wolves look like dogs, there is emotion involved...not unlike Bobcats looking like lovable exotic house cats.

It's really all about the packaging...

…So you want to reduce the number of them around you, by bringing one full time, into your house, dead.
There’s a kind of a funny ironic way of viewing it, if you think about it😂

Wolves are like nuclear bombs: Its cool to have one, unless its a live.

No, I want a mount to go along with all of the other mounts I have. Because I enjoy having dead animal mounts in my house. The state wants the numbers reduced so that they don't hurt the turkey, deer, and rabbit population too much.

Funny that.
When there were no people around to balance the various animals it happened naturally.
And successfully for millennia without interference from some slack jawed paper pusher.
Now they turn nature on it's head and lay blame on a single species.
I would say **** sapiens.

It will still happen naturally but it's not a good death. Ever seen deer become so over populated that they have no food to eat and starve to death? I think a quick death is a better alternative.

The ecosystem isn’t natural now (not within the bounds of natural variability) and never will be again. Human settlements and infrastructure has changed things such that many natural resources and animal populations require human management to be sustainable over time. Those of us who manage natural resources are well aware of this. It’s a science.
