1985 yanmar ym26
A leaky gasket on the right rear of my tractor caused my brakes to seize. I recently had a mechanic friend replace brakes on both sides of the rear with new brakes, springs and gaskets. After everything was assembled, after putting it in gear it won't move. Unless the power inverter pedal for the PTO is pushed down then it does go forward.. This would be way too difficult to operate, bringing my right foot back and holding down this pedal just to drive my tractor around. Please help

First check your trans. fluid, if it's too low your power shift will not engage.
Is your YM26 four wheel drive?
If so, engage the front wheels and see if they will move the tractor.
If it does, sounds like the bolts on the rear differential have sheared off.

I presume he means a YM226.
The early models were made with six bolt rears and later ones with 8 bolt rears.

When I replaced the brakes on my YM2310 I had to grind on the shoes a bit because the friction material was too thick. I did have everything correct as far as the cam that expands the shoes. Anyway, if I had put the drums on without removing any of the friction material the tractor wouldn't have moved. So maybe this is the problem with the OP's tractor. I suppose the OP could jack up the tractor and see if one wheel moves while the other does not. And I think what the OP is calling a power inverter for the PTO is the differential lock.

He could also mean it's a YM2610 or a YM2620 or a YM126 or a YM276.

No idea what YM model and type of brakes to provide detailed assistance.

It really doesn't matter, all those models have basically the same rear end/differential.
If it won't move unless the diff lock is engaged, the bolts in the diff have sheared off.

I hope he has a YM126. It's a very small SCUT and easy to lift. About the size of a Wheel Horse GT.

Back in 2013 I encountered an FX24D with sheared ring gear bolts. It would not move forward with or without differential lock engaged. It would move forward with 4 wheel drive engaged. I would suspect a broken stub axle. That is based on only what I am reading here which I admit I don't have a good understanding of what we are talking about.

I have had my Hi. Lo. range shift lever in between gears. It didn't actually lock in unknowing it! NTM. And If I recall prevented any forward or Rev. movement.
