That ratcheting sounds is extremely loud. I think if I just drive it like that, some metal piece is going to wear down inside the transmission and cause a lot more extensive damage. It's like when you miss a gear in a manual and just keep trying to force it in gear anyway. Can't be good for it.

Peter didn't you have a insurance claim years back on this tractor?

That sounds like more damage while driving

Yeah, back when I was still making payments on it, it was covered by Deere Guard or whatever its called, so that covered replacing the cab frame. They never went into the transmission when that repair was made. Haven't have any issues really over the last 12 years/1,200 hours. Still don't quite get why enabling park on a hill would cause this issue. I mean, its when you're not on level ground you need a parking brake, lol.

Got her loaded onto the trailer and heading to the dealer 1st thing in the morning.

I sure hope just removing to top cover from the transmission will allow them to fix the issue.

ouch...when that trailer let loose and hit the cab, i bet you had to throw out that pair of pants. i remember when a rock shattered my windshield....shocked the crap out of me. but my pants were still secured. i move my goose neck horse trailer with a ball mounted on my bucket, and always worry what would happen if it came loose. i only haul on flat ground, but sometimes go overboard and lock it to the ball just incase.

i hope its an easy fix. seems weird you cant use a parking brake device on a hill though.

A parking brake and putting tractor in Park are two different things. Park is like a gear being engaged.

@grsthegreat Yeah, I hope not to relive that experience again. I actually moved the tractor to intercept the rolling trailer and the hill only got steeper (much steeper) from where I was. The trailer and everything on it would have ended up as a bent pile of metal down in the woods, had I not stopped it.

Yeah, these tractors are kind of weird in that they don't have an old school parking brake. i.e. press down on a brake pedal and have it apply the breaks to the rear wheels via some sort of locking mechanism. The only means of keeping it from rolling is to either leave it in a low gear (engine off), or move the range selector into the park position.

My range selector won't go into the park position any longer, but I'm free to select ranges A - D, but it will only get moving in very low gears to overcome the "park brake". Once it gets past that first "notch" it moves more easily, but with that awful ratcheting noise as the parking pin "floats" over the teeth on the parking gear.

Ive never been in a tractor with this feature. Always one with push brake, pull lever to lock brake pedal. I hate when they try to improve easy.

Yup, my parking brake, is literally a lock on the brake.
