You Know You Are Old When

There was a knot shaped like a rabbit (if you use your imagination) in the wood paneling over the door between the living room and the kitchen in the house I grew up in. I remember my Dad carrying me on his shoulders going in to dinner so I could pet the rabbit on the way in (60 years ago).

I remember riding around on my father's shoulders when I was kid.
I also remember lifting him onto his hospital bed before he died.
He went from being the bull in the room if he was in a mood to a dried out Egyptian mummy.
In some ways life is just F'n cruel.

I know what you mean. My Dad died of Alzheimer's. I remember the day I had to help him put wheels back on a trailer he had designed and built himself 30 years prior because he forgot how to do it. He said "Son, you've got to keep me straight."

Dad died of Alzheimers 10 years ago at home with hospice. Last few days in a coma.
I sure wish they'd work on a cure. My 97yo Mom has dementia and that's bad...she repeats things.

Reality check!

(With tractor content! ;-)

I need to bore out a pto shaft universal yoke to 1 1/4 from 1 inch. (I bought what I thought was the right piece , but the bearing cross is wrong)

To set up the yoke for boring, the three jaw chuck on the lathe needed to come off, and the four jaw mounted on (L1 spindle nose)

I'm sure both of those chucks have put on 20 pounds since I last lifted them up and down!.

The I-beam trolley purchased off Amazon arrived today, the motorized winch was purchased years ago. There will be a pivoted lifting arm over the lathe in the not so distant future!

I'm getting old and apparently weaker, but I'm not giving in!

I Ice skated at a good pace for an hour this forenoon. My legs are winky now from the efforts. I really shouldn't have gotten up on the roof this after noon to send a brush down the chimney flue. But I did!

My own father had dementia. His last words to me were "I don't know who you are, but I'm glad you came".
Mom is 95, still sharp, but forgets some.

I've learned to speak slowly and wait in conversation with her. At her age, there is no hurry!

I was recently invited to take a tour through the old farmhouse I grew up in. I was astounded at how small everything was. Even the trek to the barn had shrunk.

I have been tempted to stop at the houses that my parents grew up in and ask to take a look around. I know that they look small on the outside compared to what they did when I was little.

No, different houses, but only a mile apart and only four miles from where I have lived for the last 50 years.
