Bored boys with pocket knives. The same ones who would carve their initials into about anything.
Yep, I definitely carved my initials (or my gf's) into a few things. But under the desk? We used to put all carvings on top of the desk, or on the edge, where someone might actually see them, and where we didn't have to write blind and backwards.

One of my teen haunts, I've been back to in my 40's, and my and my gf's initials are still carved into one of the beams in the picnic pavilion. Not far from kenmbz's place! :D

There was a Sports bar in Menlo Park, CA (I think) with big thick tables and people were encouraged to carve there initials in

the tables. Also free peanuts on all of the tables and throw the shells on the floor.

You're a saint for putting up with that. I'd have probably moved to some place better, long ago! There are hospitals and similar jobs in locations without such problems.
Either that or foolishly optimistic bottoms been hit and only can get better which it did in 2019.

Until last year I was tied down caring for mom with Dementia and no way was a placement in a facility during Covid an option.

I was lucky because she was always appreciative and happy to be home.

It’s taken some time to wind things down but always more to do plus being the family go to for the oldsters.

Banks? You're not using a debit card for online purchases, are you?!? That would be very risky. I don't use a debit card for anything ever, I'm pretty sure the two in my wallet have never been used even once, they're only there in case I need ATM access in a pinch.
Yes we use debit cards however they are on an account that keeps a minimal amount of money so that if it is hacked the best they might get is a couple of hundred but more likely it will be declined for lack of funds. Since I am monitoring the accounts twice daily I just add more when needed. Nothing else is associated or linked to that account. Also I am not sure how it works or why but when we use our cards we are presented with the option to use them as either a debit or credit

I still write checks, so having my debit card hacked would be a double edged sword.
About 15 years ago a friend had that happen to her. All of a sudden checks started bouncing although she should have had money to cover them. She eventually found that somebody down in Florida had made a purchase at Sears which the clerk had to enter by hand, and accidentally entered the wrong number, which just happened to be hers. It took hours on the phone with Sears before they finally agreed to return her money-in the form of a check, which they took a couple of weeks to write. She was unable to recover her overdraft fees.

One of the problems I mentioned previously was when a "hold" appeared on my CC even though I hadn't been near the business in two weeks. I called and emailed repeatedly trying to find out what was going on, but never did. Finally after about 2 weeks the hold came off.
No big deal, it was a CC; but there have been times in my life when tieing up that much money in my checking account could have been a problem... Especially if I had checks out and didn't know about the hold. The big thing though was not knowing what the ---- was going on and management not showing the courtesy of returning my calls.

They lost a customer.

The guy who proceeded me through my career, my mentor so to speak, had to hire live-in nursing for his MIL, late in life. One of the nurses found the MIL's check book, and stole a few checks from the middle of the book. If she'd taken a few off the top, they'd have noticed right away due to the checkbook not matching the register. But by taking a few farther back in the book they had no idea the checks were even missing, until charges showed up on their statement more than a month later.

I think they figured out who did it, and how it was done, but I don't think they ever recouped all of the money that was stolen. I suspect some nurse lost a well-paying job, and indeed a whole lifetime career, over a theft that probably only amounted to a few months salary.
