Yesterday I went to shred (bushhog) a place I've done for years, and the folks who live there told me just one corner of the property was "pretty overgrown", but the rest had been cut for hay earlier in the year.
20 mile drive with tractor from where I had it parked. Got there, and knew I was in for it.
It was ALL overgrown, and the 5ac or so in that corner was taller than the cab of my tractor.
About 1pm I called the client and asked her where the closest gas station was... Luckily, it was only a couple of miles, so I went and filled up with diesel. Again. That was the only break I took all day.
They acted like not many tractors pull up to their diesel pumps. But the had fresh, hot, homemade boudin balls to snack on, so I got a couple of those. Glad I did.
Right before dark I called the clients again and told them that we were now outside the usual amount they pay me for shredding the place. They asked if I would come back tomorrow?... I told them I could, but that would be a whole day as far as price was concerned. (it's a 40 mile round trip to this place) They asked how many hours I had until I finished? I told them 4 or 5.... BUT I'd just go after dark and get done, for just a bit extra. They agreed, so I turned the lights on, and kept at it.
Somewhere around 11pm I finished. Went and shook the client's hands and got my check, and took off to the ranch where I keep my tractor in that area.
About midnight I finally turned the tractor off. 16 hour day. 14 hours driving that tractor.
Sometimes I wish I were younger. Thank God those days don't come along often.
