It's 8:45 am here in south Louisiana and the temperature is 83 degrees. Not to bad you say???
The dew point is 80.2 degrees which puts the heat index at 96.8 degrees.
By midafternoon we will probably see a heat index of around 115 degrees

Would ya do us northerners a favor and keep that humid crap down south

Both humidity and dew points been in the mid sixties low 70’s last couple weeks.

I was wrong with my prediction.
Heat index is 121 at 4:45pm. Humidity is only 57% but the dew point is 80.2 degrees.

We are 97-98 with HIGH humidity and thunderstorms on the PA/DE border.

I don't know how the crews manage either; clothes, nomex, outer gear, and actively working hard, or hiking hard. We've watched our local crew practice running 1.5" lines up 45-60 degree (not %) slopes. They are really, really fast.

I'm thankful for every single person who volunteers, or has a job, as a firefighter.

Did it for 25 years, but only 15 out on the fire line. That’s a young person’s job and I quit that at about age 35. The other 10 years was doing incident management and flying around in helicopters mapping fires and locating suppression line options. Nowadays crews are limited to 16 hours maximum and they get plenty of water, Gatorade, and MREs on the line. They are also limited to 14 days before they get 2-3 days R&R. Except for real remote locations, we don’t make them sleep on firelines anymore. We have camps with showers and catered hot meals. It’s still a dirty, nasty highly physical job.

Is that the official weather service temperature, or is that what you are seeing on your own thermometer?

We had the coolest July in history, but that isn't accurate because the official temps are taken at the Airport, and they are always 4 to five degrees higher then what we see here on the farm.

We get plenty of cold and snow here in the south. Above 5,000’ elevation.

Eddie - on that day I recorded 106F on two units. My Davis Vantage Pro 2 and my big old mercury thermometer - a Weksler.

I don't know where the "official" temp for Cheney, WA is recorded. My guess - the Cheney Fire Dept.

In any case - the official temp in Cheney is, most usually, a couple degrees higher or a couple degrees lower than I see here.

The official temp for Spokane, Wa is at the airport. That about 22 mile NE of me. And in any case - who the heck lives at the airport.

Airports are often chosen as reference sites for the lack of trees, and yet have grass, rather than concrete or asphalt around the weather station. Plus, airports are usually staffed and someone can keep track of the instruments.
