Starlink

I have the Deco M9+ system. Has worked great for our wifi in our house. Three mesh nodes, one hard-wired to the network where SL lives, the other two wirelessly linked. Made a huge difference in signal strength throughout the house. If anyone has wifi signal issues I highly recommend a mesh system and the Decos are good ones.

I've had SL for a few years now and its worked perfectly fine for us. We have zero cell phone reception so all calls for us come and go via SL. I have a few services that require a cabled connection so I added the ethernet adapter and an old switch to support their connection which is the only thing added other than what came in the box. When I set the system up the best place for the SL router/WiFi has on a window sill. 90' away from that window is my shop - a metal pole structure. Once inside the WiFi drops substantially but a text will still make it while inside the shop. So I've thought about adding a repeater. Any suggestions? There are so many devices so I'm asking here what you use and would recommend in terms of IP voice/text support vs price. for the repeater while in the shop?

If I like it I may add the same in the opposite direction for the barn and animal pens. I do have power at the shop and the opposite direction by the barn. Of note, the only reason I haven't done a 'mesh' is that we live in a heavily treed area and I am done with trenching through tree roots and laying conduit to get power to remote devices. I will not mess with anything battery powered so I'll stay with locations where the power is already in place.

Any of the outdoor rated ones (TP-link, etc.) will pull in the signal, and can be cabled to a second one inside. However, although it is pricier, I would serious consider using a POE switch in the shop wired to an outdoor access point to pick up the house, and a wired indoor access point to cover the shop/barn. If you get a managed switch, you will be able to easily check on the system(s) from the house. If you have a long run to the house, you might be happier with point to point connections,Lao called building bridges, rather than trying to stretch the house WiFi signal.

I think it depends on your budget and how much signal and bandwidth you want in the outbuildings.

All the best,

Peter

Don't use a repeater. They cut the bandwidth in half due to their design. Look into a wireless bridge. As long as you have line of sight between the buildings they can work for miles. They aren't that expensive either. That's how I get wifi to my metal pole barn which is 200' from the house. And I don't even have them fixed mounted... just propped in windows on each building generally aiming in the direction of the other.

As I’ve said I’ve been pleased with StarLink for over 2 years now. ,,,, But I got a call from the local Verizon store yesterday asking if I was pleased with my cell service ( ie. Fishing for me to upgrade 🙄) I took the opportunity to ask if wireless home internet was available yet for me. After a little digging he said yes as they were just beginning to roll it out in my area. $40-$60 a month with no data limits. Huh. 🤔 I’m going to need to reevaluate $120/month Star Link at some point.

My wife uses Verizon Wifi and it suks compared to my ATT&T or Starlink. Of course it depends upon the quality and capacity of the cell service in your area.
I think you get what you pay for.

Spectrum just laid fiber down the road along the front of our property. They are coming out today to connect 300mbps for $49.99/mo to the house, plus $14.99/mo for a landline. Next Wednesday they are connecting 100mbps for $29.99/mo to the shop, plus a landline. That will be our phone for the stained-glass business. It will lower my current landline & internet cost by $55 a month plus giving us a separate phone line for the shop.

I just got my Starlink equipment yesterday. I'll set it up this morning.

Quick question on the phone app. Can it be controlled/monitored from multiple phones? The Starlink is in my name, but I travel a bunch, and my wife might need to check it too, when I'm away. Can we both download the app and have access?

How are you guys doing through this Solar Storm ? Noticing any differences in coverage ?

Rgds, D.

I got the price increase e-mail. I find it highly unlikely the capacity in my area changed. I'm pretty rural with residences spread out quite a bit. I've never seen another SL on anyone's roof out here. Curious if anyone gets that e-mail and their price goes down?

As for the solar storm, to my knowledge our SL wasn't disrupted at all.

Price has been $120 mo for about 1 yr now.

Elon Musk has said that the powerful geomagnetic storm hitting Earth right now is putting Starlink satellites under tremendous strain.

Yikes, that adds up fast
My speed test just now is excellent

My speed test just now is excellent
fyi just now, 92 down, 11 up, latency 26ms.

I used to think 250mb down was some sort of hardware limit, but I have seen speeds higher than that. Usually like 4am.

/ Starlink #4,118
I just set mine up. on the regular speed test 237 MBPS download, 8.5 upload and 28ms latency. On the advanced speed test, 68MBPS and 12.6 upload

Just did mine,
121 Mbps down,
9.4 Mbps up,
and 37ms latency
