Now there's a list of winners....
I have no idea if California was first in any of those things. From my time living in the Bay area I know they like to think so.

Same Sex marriage, Emission Regs and Drug decriminalization are my bet for nationwide impact.

I met people who moved to California for same sex marriage and drug decriminalization.

Yet to meet anyone moving here for the clean air act...

I’m just thankful that the rest of us have California to suck up most of the dirty air coming from China (worlds largest coal burner and adding capacity at a record clip every day) upwind of us to the west. Thats like a big air filter for the rest of us. Who wants a dirty air filter ? I am glad that California is doing their best to keep it clean.

When they announce these things, they never mention the cost of compliance including all the lost operating time and expense owners will incur dealing with these complicated emissions systems.

No ownership ban... only a ban on operating.

It is against the law for me to start my brush cutter and blower.

Over the road trucks not in compliance are banned from hauling freight out of ports.

Entire fleets of construction tractors sold off and moved out of state.

Utilities forced to dump perfectly good equipment...

My tree guy got rid of his 30 hp Bandit diesel chipper.

Generator rental companies require annual registration and operating permits for diesel units so mass exodus of non compliant.

For more than half a century older equipment was grandfathered but no more.

There are very imited exceptions...

You can obtain a one way trip permit to exit California... some emergency equipment allowed but severely restricted... as well as limited AG applications

The crane company I use repowered because a $400,000 dollar crane is worth the 30k+ to replace each diesel.

Every year I get a visit at the Hospital checking the hours logged on the Diesel Generators...

For decades we ran weekly under load testing for 30 minutes plus cool down cycle.

Now it is once a month to meet licensing... of course all must be documented and submitted along with $850 annual air permit per generator.

Buying new non compliant is no longer possible.

Companies like Honda no longer have entire product lines available ranging from mowers to generators...

Will the same spread to other areas... history shoes over time it does.
It’s not absolute. A lot of what happens in CA stays in CA. For example, new vehicle sales have long had CA compliant and the rest of the country versions.

Yes but 14 other states have joined California specifying CA compliant to sell in these states.

Unleaded fuel was laughed at Dads friends in other states…

His good friend a Nevada rancher said unleaded gas will never happen here… it’s a California thing.

We all know how that went… CA mandate for unleaded went nationwide.

Don't forget MTBE being added to the fuel in California to cut down on smog. When it first came out, it caused the price of gasoline to jump because they had to reformulate how hey made gasoline.

Then it was discovered that MTBE worked its way into the water table and contaminated all the underground water so it wasn't safe to drink well water anymore.

Since it was too expensive to "NOT" put the MTBE into gasoline, they just kept on destroying the water table.

I haven't kept up on this since leaving CA in 2003. Do they still add MTBE to the gasoline there?

At some point people will have to protest in some way that makes people who drive policy aware the populous is getting fed up. Farmers did it in france and they went to great lengths to make there point. It worked for now as they have backed off on new regulations and taxing but for how long.

Only until the old ones can no longer put up the good fight.

It's the camel's nose under the tent or incrementally moving towards a goal...

The other thing that they don't mention is tractors are being used to maintain thousands of acres of green space in the USA but I doubt the EPA is counting how much particulate matter is being absorbed by that green space.

Probably also worth mentioning that vegetation control is important to preventing wildfires in California and other western states which has more significant environmental impact than these new regulations, IMO.

I always get a chuckle when the EPA starts stating numbers that will die, while saying how much money the insurance companies might save, while the insurance companies continue to jack your rates through the ceiling. "new standard will yield up to $46 billion in net health benefits"
I know firsthand that the ALA, and the EPA, have far more statistics than you can imagine.
