And that attitude is the problem today, pure and simple.

What attitude are you talking about? My attitude that my family's life is worth more than all the property that I own, or the attitude about being sued after the guy shot the home intruder.

Huh? “People over property”? What if the person breaking in is a crazed meth adict looking to kill his family? How you gonna know when he’s wandering around out in the hallway outside your bedroom?

How you supposed to know what someone breaking into your house at 3AM wants? It’s not like you can ask him.
I’m with Lou. You in my house and not answering my request to get out immediately is gettin aired out.

Apparently you didn't read my post very closely. I will defend my family at all costs. I will stand between them and the danger until they are safe. I will do what I have to do to protect them from any threat. But I will not put them in danger to protect any property. My main priority, my only priority, is to keep them safe and to get them out of danger ASAP. There are weapons positioned in my house so that any door I go in or out I will be armed as I cross the threshold either way. I will use those weapons to protect my family and myself from harm.

One of my brothers in law had an accidental firing of a 22 in his house thirty or forty years ago. The bullet went thru at least two, maybe three sheetrock walls and into the headboard of his only child's bed. My nephew was at school at the time but it shook everybody in the family up bad. Now imagine an armed methhead in your house at 3AM with a high capacity magazine in a pistol letting off 15-18 9mm in your general direction. Do you have any children sleeping in their beds? Would you risk them being hit.

That is why I have a twelve gauge with 00 buck and slugs ready in the bedroom. If it ever comes to it I want the fight over 0.2 seconds after it starts.

I gave you a thumbs up for looking out for your family AAAA++++++

However your tactics as a family protector... well...... could use some improvement.
If you are really worried about getting sued by some scum bag burglar, there is insurance for that you know.
Its fairly cheap too ,like 200 bucks a year, and they hire the lawyers, bail ect....

+ there's a lot more company's than the 2 above

Youngest daughter works for a large insurance company. We are well insured for about anything. I am really not afraid of being sued. I am scared that something will happen to one of my precious grands or one of my daughters.

Family and friends have a history of loosing family members when they shouldn't have. One Aunt/Uncle lost both their sons in the same car wreck the same night. They were in their forties when it happened and were still grieving forty years later when they passed. Our next door neighbors lost their only child when he was killed in a car wreck at age 15. Nearly forty years have passed and I have seen both cry over him in the past year. I do not want to live the rest of my life grieving over a child killed because I wanted to keep somebody from taking a TV or stereo out of my house. Protect your family first! Property can be replaced, children cannot.

A Warning !!

Back about six to eight years ago I had a very eye opening conversation with a young lady who had moved into our area and opened a gun shop with her husband. The couple had lived in another state near a large metropolitan area. They had been active in shooting competitions and knew a lot of gun industry people. Some of the most knowledgeable firearms people I have ever talked to.

They had been called as expert witnesses in more than thirty trials. What she told me about the trials was another bit of knowledge that changed my outlook on a lot of things. These trials were mostly of people who had been involved in a defensive shooting and were being sued by the person they shot or the deceased criminal's family.

Among a bunch of other stuff she said was this. Do not post macho bullsnot about "somebody trying to break in my house I'll shoot them dead outside and drag them inside" or other idiotic crap like that. If you are ever involved in a deadly confrontation there will be civil law suits even after you are cleared by the police. And every single word you post online will be read to a jury that knows little about firearms, cares nothing about how scared you were, and wants to hurry up and finish so they can go home. Big law firms have people who do nothing but search for this stuff and something you post today about how 'anybody breaking in my house at night will go out in a hearse' will come back to haunt you ten years from now.

Heck, I have a relative who has made a very good living online stalking job applicants for employers. Have a picture smoking a joint on social media and you will never be hired. Bad mouth you present employer, forget getting hired anywhere else. He only does this now for a couple large businesses but you get the idea.

Be careful what you post.

RSKY,
I totally agree about the slimy, thieven, lawyers. We were involved in a lawsuit and that's exactly what they did to us.
However.... They found nothing but good things, they even came here to tractor-bynet and copied years of my postings, I saw them in a pile during deposition.

They were highly disappointed, when they saw that there was zero info for them to grill us about. No arrests, not even a jay walking ticket.
All they managed to do was make our life Hell for 4 years, and steal all the $$$ I had saved for retirement.

We moved to a friendlier place that doesn't coddle the criminals at all, you might consider that if you are scared for your kids.

Life is no fun when you run around scared.

We all do. None of us know where the murderer is going to shoot, but me, my wife, and my son know where the bedrooms are (my daughter has no gun) and we wouldn’t start shooting at each other.

You may want to re-think your ammo choice 00 buck sounds macho, but it’ll kill innocent bystanders just like a handgun. Several weapons instructors told me to use birdshot instead. It is deadly enough in the main path of shot, but wont penetrate walls like buckshot and kill family/innocent bystanders.

I think we can all discern a porch pirate or a petty garage thief over someone walking in an upstairs hallway kicking in bedroom doors trying to rape our women or shoot us. Nobody here, including myself, seems trigger happy or “shoot first”. They all seem like responsible gun owners that want to protect their loved ones from lunatics looking to savagely take their family members lives.

Here’s another thing.

Does anyone really think “what lawyer is going to sue me?” when the excrement hits the fan in your home when your lives are in danger?
Lawyers can sue anyone they want if someone wants to.
I always ask the question “Do I want to be judged by 10 jurors or be carried by 6 pallbearers?“

If I’m upstairs and hear someone downstairs stealing our computer, or in my garage stealing a chainsaw, I’m not shooting anything. When there’s someone in one of our bedrooms? Thats a different story.

I’m hoping if and when an intruder sees the VCR an 1980 Zenith TV and 1960 Blaupunk/Garrad stereo the error of their ways will be self evident.

Mom always had an Australian Shepard and while all the neighboring homes were hit she never was but there were times at 3 am when her dog would start barking… who knows?

I stand corrected. I just checked and my Maverick is first loaded with a high velocity #2 lead shot then three rounds of low velocity #4-buck, then a low velocity 00-buck. The side saddle has 4-buck and a slug. Stock ammo holder has low noise #8 shot and more 4-buck. So the ammo I have on the Maverick is tailored more for skunks, raccoons, and coyotes than a home intruder. Birdshot has a reputation of making nasty wounds but not stopping the threat. My choice would be the new Winchester Defender low velocity #2 shot if I could find it locally. But by the time I pay shipping it would be way over $2/round. I will buy some when I send in my next big online order if I don't find it locally.

My wife knows that if I start screaming "DOWN" that she is to get on the floor. If we are out somewhere and I tell her to "Scram" that means there is danger and to shut up and get in the car or back to safety. Daughters were taught this when they were at home. Haven't had this discussion with the grands yet but I will in the future.

Oh yeah, I also have some 3" 41-pellet #4-buck handy that I use on skunks in traps (long story). Hit them in the back hindquarters and they don't spray. Traps usually not reusable but.....

Growing up it was common knowledge for kids the home bathtub is the safest place when shots firedbbut back then tubs were mostly cast iron.

A few of my friends built safe rooms in their homes and we don’t have tornados here…

Second floor of a single family had a stray go through the screen, dingle pane window, hollow core closet door and two layers of drywall and lodged in the next room drywall over a stud.

My guess 9mm?

More common is finding slugs in comp roofs from celebrations shooting in the air…

Not a slag but I noticed a fist size hole in comp shingles and splintering ply sheathing…

Since airport nearby best guess ice from a plane on approach to Oakland?

Ok, another question

How warm, °F, should I keep a basement that isn’t used in the winter to help the main level stay warm in a cold climate?
I would say between 55 and 60 would be comfortable. that's about what mine is and I'm in WNY.

Ok, level 2 question.

I have 1 shotgun, 1 rifle and 1 handgun. How many rounds of ammo for each should I have on hand for home defense? And “as many as I can afford” is not a valid answer.
Just for home defense I would say at least one box of each at a minimum. But it is good to stock up.

Ok new question.

Is the speed limit transition from a speed to another speed required at the speed limit sign or at the view of the sign?

/ Real questions that you would like to get an answer… #117
It will depend upon your locality, but in many it used to actually be the second sign. I don't know if it still is or not.

/ Real questions that you would like to get an answer… #118
I know in MO you best down to the lower speed at the first sign, does not seem like you have at the higher speed when you get to the sign. My argument on that theory fell on deaf ears with the trooper.

it is at the sign, the fist transition sign is a suggestion, but you need to be at the speed indicated on the second sign at that sign...

What do you mean first and second sign?

In my area, going into a town, on a highway where speed limit is 65mph, at the town limits there is a single sign that says 35 mph.

So 65 mph till the 35 sign?
