Tree cutting accident

I've had tree cutters here who cut every day, year after year wearing flip flops, shorts & t shirt!
I was one of those kids making frequent visits to the ER, starting with a broken arm at age 8, and another similar annual event almost every year up through at least middle school.

I will never forget my very first ER visit, when a tree climber came in hopping on one foot, and each arm thrown over the shoulders of his two coworkers. One of the coworkers was carrying one of those little Igloo Lunchmate coolers, containing the guy's foot.

You'd think that'd be a once-in-a-lifetime event, but wouldn't you know, I saw almost the same thing happen a second time a few years later. This time it was a different arborist, who had put the chainsaw into his leg just above the knee.

In both cases, they made the poor kid (me) suffering with the broken arm wait, while they addressed these more urgent cases.

I had some close calls through the years when felling trees. The one that came closest to taking me out was when I was logging alder. Anyone that has cut alder can understand how touchy it is. I was working on a fairly steep hillside and had to deal with a hangup. This is where a tree you tried dropping gets hung up in the branches or top of an adjacent tree.

I moved down the slope to the lower tree that was preventing the other tree from falling down. I was cutting the back wedge cut when the tree I was cutting split from the cut upwards and snapped off bringing the leaner tree and the top near straight down towards me. I threw myself to the side and down in the protection of a previously dropped tree which prevented me from being crushed. However I was struck rather hard in my forestry hardhat as the event unfolded. Hard enough to dent the steel.

Although most times I do not bother with safety equipment I was sure glad I was wearing the hardhat that time.

One thing I will say about chainsaw accidents though is many of them occur because people do not take proper care of their saw. Chains should not be loose, or dull. Chains should only turn with opening the throttle and stop when throttle is released. If a chainsaw is too heavy for a person to hold properly either a smaller one should be used or a stronger person should wield it. Safety is not just the equipment you wear but a way of doing things.

I do not understand the need for hearing protection. Maybe it is because I do not have a big saw (Stihl 029). It just isn't loud enough to worry about hearing there are many things I hear every day that are much louder.

Also, when I am out in the forest I like to listen to what is happening - for instance is the wind that I am not feeling on the ground moving the treetops around potentially causing falling limbs or other dangers.

Huh?

Doubt you're hearing the wind in the high branches when the saw is even idling let alone when it's screaming.

I'm 50% deaf, anytime your ears ring after being exposed to some loud sound you have permanently lost a percent of your hearing. And it's a cumulative thing. Sooner or later you'll be just like me.

I am working with industrial woodworking machinery. Not directly in the shops, but selling; servicing
those things are loud. Most motors of them are running 10....20.000 rpm
And I am 100 % with you. From experience. 😬

Even more. Hi-speed cutting any material is loud process. I would consider wearing hearing protection even working with battery chainsaw.

But each of us are unique, if someone don't like it - I am not here to judge ;)

Basically any chainsaw is above the recommended threshold for ear protection. Some of the pro saws really scream and definitely need ear muffs.
