lol ... what is done is done...

I would also recommend polyethylene plastic wrap for tree wounds to the cut of the middle tree it would help preventing dry back..

Can't really wrap it cuz I still have a couple live branches below the cut and alot of regeneration "saplings" growing

Is there something I can put on the cut itself? Yeah, just as expected, wife wasn't happy. I said look on bright side, the dead cherry is still standing. She wasn't impressed.

When we had an orchard - apples, cherries & peaches - it was a small bird. Called either - downy woodpecker or sap sucker. They pecked small holes - diameter of a pencil lead - in the bark and licked up the sap that oozed out.

On the trunk there could be areas with hundreds of holes. I fought this problem by wrapping the entire trunk with burlap. Four inches wide and yard & yards long. From the ground to the top of the trunk. Kept in place with loose fitting nylon zip ties. No more holes and the existing ones got a chance to heal.

There was always plenty of other birds/wasps to attack the fruit.
I thought about sap suckers, but the way he describes the holes, they sound too small.

I would do something very similar to the healthy tree on the left. If you don’t keep them pruned an apple tree will put much of its energy into growing taller, rather than on growing fruit. Then again I would never dare prune a homeowner’s tree…they would freak when they saw the results.

She doesn't want me pruning them. I would start 6" from the ground and then dig out the stumps.

I told her they are getting out of control years ago. Hell, we live in orchard country, we have friends who own orchards (cherry and apple). She won't ask them

I know people like that… hence my comment that I won’t prune for homeowners .
