JD400 HYDRAULIC OIL FILTER

Jd400 Pump started to whine while using the backhoe. Figured Id try do full service before I burn up the pump if I havent already.

In the oil filter housing was a valve that doesn't appear to me to belong there. I have service manual and part diagrams but both show filter housing different from mine but neither show a valve in this portion of the housing.

yes same valve is in the bottom passage which connects to the transmission sump. I think when the filter is clogged it pushes 28 down and flows to transmission. the mystery valve would block that flow. Correction I think 28 is surge valve.

I found the origin of the pump noise, the pump coupler splines have worn down to nothing. The coupler I have t22915 is for tractors:
2030, 2440 s/n -340999, 2630, 2640 s/n -340999, 300B, 302A, 401. I'm supposed to have t22914.

I wonder if the pump is from one of those models?

I ended up leaving out the valve in the oil return filter, I have no idea where its supposed to be.

Your pump needs the T22915. T22914 is for smaller pump with keyed shaft. Yours has a splined shaft. Shaft is most likely worn also and should be replaced if you want coupler to not fail prematurely.

I would like to but my time/funds are limited. The coupler did fit well on the shaft.
