Illinois has a law that you can leave the hitch ball on as long as it doesn’t extend more than 4 inches past the bumper. I’d bet that the hitches on most pickup trucks are more than 4 inches long. Google gave me the answer.

Illinois does not have such a law; I specifically quoted (#18,355 two days ago) the bill which attempted to make this into law in IL, but it didn't make it into the books.

I couldn't find any other actual references to laws, everything on the net is "there are places" just like maps used to say "here be dragons".

Only law I know if the ball blocks the license plate, Like most bumper hitch balls do. You know the ones that do not just slide out.

Now in MO if you register your truck for 18K Gross weight plus load you only get a FRONT license plate and no rear plate is required. You do have to educate the Highway Patrol on that law frequently.

I suppose if the truck was already going a decent clip by the time it got under the bridge, in a turn, because of the "centrifugal force" (yes yes centripetal acceleration thanks we know) the trailer goes up on the inside and down on the outside of the turn... and up on the inside was enough to get it scrunched.
Though honestly it looks like it may have also hit the bridge support, but I can't tell if that's before or after it hit the ceiling.

It was wedged in good. Up closer it looked like it had a couple air conditioner units on top in the middle of the trailer. But it could have also been the roof pealing back that I saw.
