Qualified operators never do stupid stuff?

At least with a tractor, you have a slim chance of shooting between the wheels if it's freewheeling. Why does it not have a deck over the tracks at the door? Is it looks, because it does look cool? Or because a deck would cause a massive snow/ice jam?

That's a big reason why I don't have a SS or CTL and hesitate when I have to operate one. Only egress is under the loader boom or remove the tiny back window and climb out over the engine. Where do you go when you have an engine fire and the boom is stuck part way up?

Looks to me like there is no way to get onboard without stepping into deaths doorway . I would have taken one look at that situation and said oh hell no I aint trying to stop this ( especially with snow on the moving tracks) This nearly deadly accident was totally avoidable and the descision to try to climb onboard was a poor one. He's lucky to be alive

It would have made the news also if you lived in Lake Tahoe and owned a $150K snow removal machine and it ran over you and cut your leg off. What difference does it make whether you know him? It was a tragic accident and the purpose of the news report I saw was to increase people's awareness of being careful when using snow removal equipment.

He got out of the cab to help a neighbor and must have left the machine in neutral without the park brake and the machine rolled forward and ran over him. Stupid mastake by someone not qualified to run machinery

Accidents happen, nice to be able to decide someone is qualified or not so easily.

This makes me think I need to get a new seat switch. I have a [AFFILIATE=1, nofollow=true, newwindow=true, title="Kubota"]Kubota[/AFFILIATE] L4600 manual shift. A few years ago the seat switch started shutting off my machine at odd times and not allowing it to start sometimes. So I, like an idiot I guess, took a cable tie and in effect disabled it. I'll get a new one tomorrow.

I feel bad for the guy, if he was helping a neighbor or just doing his own, it's unfortunate he was hurt. Skilled or not, if you have a machine, you're going to use it and it just takes 1 second of lapse in thought to get hurt. Yes maybe this made the national news because he's an actor. But we all should take a second and use this to remind ourselves to pay full attention when using machinery, even if you feel comfortable and are skilled, it only takes a second for s*** to go sideways. Instead of bashing the guy and saying he did something stupid, use his unfortunate situation to help yourself.

No way to avoid stepping on the tracks to get in the machine. I'll bet it would take 20 tries to make it in if it was moving. This machine needs an exterior emergency stop - a lever or something. Even a simple seat switch would have prevented the accident.

I’m aware there is no step as ive spent hundreds of hours in them. On newer models there is a door alarm if The brake is not set and the door is open. Ive used the model that he has a few times but don’t recall if it has this feature. He must have been on a decent incline as these don’t free wheel so well.

Keep in mind his is 30ish years old.

I now know who the guy is and he sounds like a good guy beyond his acting which I guess a whole lot of other people were not aware of either.
The presumption of the media that he is know to everyone is just another reflection of their disconnect from from everyday "real" America that lives outside their little bubble. One simple sentence with a brief bio would have been what a journalist would have written.
How about the guy who works at the hardware store that slid off the road into a pole and was severely injured?

Tracked vehicles - bulldozers or sno-cats - are sketchy to operate on a slope. They can climb straight-up or descend straight down real well, but operating in "side-slope" conditions is genuinely scary. Those grousers on the tracks make great "runners", and the wider the tracks, the quicker-better the slide, especially if the snow is packed.

It is possible that a snow-cat parked sideways on a slope with engine off and blade down and parking-brake set will just "settle" and start to slide sideways down the hill all on its own. If you are on the down-hill side of that, and the heavy machine slides over you, you are hurt. Or worse.

I've seen photos/report of that happening with a D6R LGP (some 50klbs) on about a 30% side-grade, the operator was just getting off to adjust blocks/ramps to walk it up on a low-bed, and the thing took off down the side-slope. Thankfully, the operator was dismounting on the up-hill-side and just leaped the last couple feet to the ground and watched it slide sideways to the bottom of the slope. Anyone on the downhill side of that slide would be hamburger.

Is it possible that Mr Renner was on the downhill of a sideways slide? Yes. Even a few feet of sideways slide would have enough momentum from a heavy machine to inflict injury like Mr. Renner's.

A tracked machine is a LOT of rolling resistance, and for the most part does not just "take off" moving unexpectedly. Operators are aware of that. If a side-slide is what happened, Mr. Renner would not be the first (wily veteran or not) to have not recognized that hazard.

He was out of his machine talking to the famoly member who's cat he was dogging out and the snow cat started moving on its own.. he attempted to reenter the then slowly loving snowcat only to get run over by its tracks which had to be climbed over to enter the cab. Lucky to be alive at all... when a machine of thay size starts moving just gtfo of the way!

It did not sound as if he was buckled in when it rolled over and he was thrown from the cab.

Was outside and snowcat started to roll. He tried to jump in and got run ovet

I never heard about a rollover. I like this actor too. That's one hell of a piece of equipment he's got there too! Watching mayor of Kingstown too, he needs to hurry back. Speedy recovery @
