Grade 8 Shear Bolt?

Hi All,

I broke a bolt on my Case IH BS174R, specifically part # BER657199. The description is Bolt - Grade 8.8 Shear, & Nut. Is there such a thing as Grade 8 shear bolts?

Does anybody know what size the bolt is? The parts diagram says 6 are needed and I can’t figure where the other 5 are.

8.8 is a metric bolt, equal to a grade 5 in SAE

Parts list probably means a kit/packet of 6 so you have spares....

And don't confuse SAE grade 8 with metric 8.8...... Both SAE grade 5 and metric 8.8 are 120,000 shear bolts....

Many times they are 1/4 inch, BUT it depends on application, what is diameter of hole you are going to put bolt in....

Likely not 1/4 inch if it's grade 8.8!

It might be easiest just to order the parts kit, unless you have a Case dealer near you. You probably will have it next week.
Better yet, order two; that way you can use one, and match the other up at your leisure.

Likely not 1/4 inch if it's grade 8.8!

Maybe 6mm then.... OR probably could convert to 1/4 inch Grade 5...
Could always determine size from broken pieces or part list for tractor/impliment....

As point of reference:
6 mm is a little smaller than 1/4 inch
8 mm very close to 5/16 inch
10 mm is a little larger than 3/8 inch
12 mm is a little smaller than 1/2 inch
