Bought a new L3560, state shut down the project. Sell or keep?

I bought a BX25D initially and swapped it real fast to a new 2018 B2650 TLB and loved it until the rear end ring gear failed (under warranty), so I traded it for a new 2021 L3560 cab TLB. I have 125 hours on it, paid around $56K for it, and the state has come in and killed my project that was the reason for this larger machine. It looks like I am done. I owe around $20K on the L3560 a year later, so still paying Kubota monthly, but now I have no real use for such a machine. I had planned to use it heavy over 2022-2024 to finish my project, and figured I would maybe downsize after that point and likely have 600-800 hours on it. So I am stuck in a mental tough spot. I can keep it and just know that it is there when I want or need it, but that is not often. Or sell and go back down to a B2650/LX2610 sized machine and still not use it much, still be able to grab it when needed, but not have almost $60K sitting in a garage.

How would you look at this?

If it were me, I’d put it up for sale. If there are still shortages, you may get a nice price. If we go into a recession, may be harder to sell (and tough to write a check each month).

What did they shutdown if you dont mind me asking? Could to scale back the project and get the go ahead?

If you downsize with a similar B2650 with BH (new) will be ~ $35K range, then with what you owe $20K on the L3560 you have $35K of equity considering zero depreciation on the L3560.

Check with your dealer to see what trade value you have towards a smaller unit - you might find you still need to come up with $4-5K and then have a smaller machine, no cab etc. If they want more money just keep the L3560 IMO.

As I recall from your posts you have been filling in a large ravine around your house and leveling it out - will they let you finish grade and plant grass etc. or is it a total "stop work" case?

What about the new shed you bought - is that still on or is that impacted by the state's decision too?

Well, they say bought lessons are the ones most learned. That's exactly how mine usually work out. Most times I have to pay them so I can leave, instead of me getting paid, and hitch hike back home. Count up my change, all to get into the next "good deal". Nowadays though, I'm a purdy fart smeller, I have learned my lessons.

Well good - you got most of what you wanted but didn't get it all - the positive aspect is you didn't get fined or told to remove it!

Back on topic of keeping or selling the L3560 I would lean to keep it - you likely will lose $ trading down and will still spend a few thousand and have less tractor. Pay it off, then decide in two years if you want to sell it then buy a smaller machine that fits your needs.

It is very hard to ascertain everyone's individual circumstances on a post like this in a forum. But if you really don't need it anymore, selling it for as much as the market will bear certainly seems like the most logical and reasonable course forward. You may be pleasantly surprised at how much it is worth.

Well according to the other current thread about a decline in tractor sales, a new 3560 goes for 80,000 maple-syrup bucks up in Canada. So I would trailer it up there and sit on the side of the road with a sign until a sufficient briefcase of cash appears.

I’m guessing they said you disturbed more than an acre and needed a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan? The engineering company I worked for always prepared one and put it in our plans, it was a pretty simple and standard thing.

You can buy a small tractor like you think you will normally need for a lot less money.

If there is any chance of needing or making use of the L3560 I am the type to hold on to it. Financial sense be darned.

If tractor prices keep running up like they have for the past few years, another way of looking at this is you could keep and use the tractor for a few years more and then resell for about what you paid for it.

Ran into a similar situation on a subdivision build.
EPA was trying to say a drainage was a blue line stream. Developer finally got it sorted out and we proceeded as planned.
Nothing attorneys and money cant fix.

You could list it for what you believe it to be worth and only sell it if you get your price. If you have the financial means to hang on to it, you certainly have enough land to justify it, though mostly woods. If you can't get your price out of it, you may not be netting that much savings by the time you get the other one bought. Especially if you have to swap out attachments too, that may be a hard exchange right now, to get everything replaced that you need. You could end up at a wash, savings wise.

I just went to Build My Kubota, to build it again today it is $63,595 list price. It is up around $6000 from a year ago when I bought mine. This list does not have the $1000 top and tilt kit, the online build tool does not allow it with the backhoe picked. But my dealer did order and install it, I just have to unbolt and remove it all any time I need the backhoe. It is not hard, it takes 10 minutes to remove or replace.

Also, mine was a 3560LE, but the dealer added back the missing items to bring it back to a full L3560 with cruise, lights, mirrors and whatever else was required. Since I bought in the middle of the Covid production mess with little inventory, I took what was on the ground and just had them bump back all of the missing stuff. Plus we swapped out the glass for the defrost glass, and I added a BT car stereo and had the tires filled with Rim Guard. Its about as loaded up as you can get it aside from me cheaping out on the hydraulic thumb... I bought the manual adjustable thumb.
