Mostly, I'm not sure about the high school students. But at our facility, they have to have at least 1180 at a minimum on SAT, preferably higher...and if they don't cut the mustard they get cut. But we are training young engineers. They need to know the general scope of mfg, not necessarily how to do most everything machining wise. I'm still learning myself at my age.
.
They get manual training first, and then exposed to cnc training. I hope to improve their cnc training course.
Kyle, are the students going on to study for an engineering degree?

Friday builder put wreath (actually which would be the correct word for that thing ??) on top.
Here we have tradition, that when builders has reached highest point of the building, they put that "crown". then customer has to drop the party. if not, builder fix there filthy old trousers or something nasty like that :sneaky:
Agreed for tomorrow to throw pizza party there
That is the correct word - "Wreath"

Here in Texas the builders put a small tree at the tallest point, but I have not heard about any consequence if a party is not given. That part of the tradition must have been left out when it got to America, but I'm not a commercial builder or owner so maybe not the best source.

Good morning! A cool 46˚F just like yesterday and clear skies, heading to the mid 80s. There has been no rain in a month. There is a constant cloud of dust on the farm.

I don't know the numbers but this first October weekend of the Fall Festival seemed to be as expected with thousands of people roaming through-out the Farm and kids getting worn out with all the activities. Two tractors had to work the wagon rides in the morning. I was the sole driver for the afternoon/night shift which was extended both nights till closing. Each stop had people waiting to get on the wagon ride and many times the trailer was full to capacity -60-. At each stop I was able to fit everyone in that was waiting and left no one behind. The crowds did not diminish till Sunday evening when it started to look like a weekday again. There were many happy families all the people were real friendly. The pig races, wild west show, apple cannons, face painting, African animal show, candy cannon, fire works, and of course the tractor trailer rides were all big hits. Just my trailer on my shift hauled about 1000 Saturday and 800 Sunday.
About half of the pumpkins were sold from the thousands in the pumpkin patch. The big hit in the pumpkin patch were the photo props - old Farmall A tractor, love couch, tea set, bench swing, old pick-up, cow trailer, hay bails, old claw foot bath tub, and the pumpkin house.

46° and clear skies this morning, going up to 75°. We may get up to 80° by mid-week.

Got most of the grass mowed yesterday, everything except the pasture, which didn't need it. Got a lot of dust relocated as well. As much as I enjoy all these days of sunny and low 70s, we really need some rain. None it the forecast for the next 10 days.

Sat down in the comfy chair with the back massager on it after that, and woke up two hours later. Another epic nap.

Neat candy cannon, Don.

Glad the knee is feeling better, Bird.

Good morning, gents.

Good Morning
It’s 45 with high just over 50 and rain today. Not much different than yesterday.

Didn’t accomplish much yesterday, spent some time on the computer doing graphic stuff for my wife, went to lunch with son and grandson and tinkered in the shop a bit.

Today won’t be much different, a friend is coming over with a guitar amp that he wants me to look at, not sure what the issue is yet, but we will see. Have to cut some sandblast mask for the rock man, but that’s all that is planned. At some point I have to get a suit for my youngest son’s wedding, it’s coming up in 3 weeks so I best not drag my feet.

Here's the dilemma. At our level, the students really just need to grasp the concepts of manufacturing, not necessarily making a whole bunch of projects. They make a small project out of aluminum. Our students get so much more training and classes, that the machining is just one facet. We hope they learn to "design for manufacture".
I cannot begin to stress how important that really is. As a Quality Jerk, I've spent a fair portion of the last 23 years trying to get engineers to walk out on the production floor and actually get their hands into the manufacturing processes. "It works on paper" doesn't always translate to real world manufacturing success. Knowing what works and what doesn't is a big part of good design. People have to be able to get their hands and/or tools into the spaces where parts need to go, and they must be able to do it efficiently. Knowing the flow of the manufacturing processes is also crucial. Entirely too many engineers make it painfully obvious that they've never actually built anything.

Sounds like your organization gets this, Kyle. Kudos.

When I got the mechanical engineering degree in Denmark there were two tracks to get it. One was through college , university track and then there was a way to go from having a 4 year apprenticeship in one of trades such as machinist , mechanic etc which is what I did. So after the apprenticeship went into preparation for entrance test and then into the study for mechanical engineer degree. Yearly exams had to be passed or you were out. I think more than half flunked out as I remember the first year and only 25 percent actually graduated. It was hard work since I went out of school at 15 and had a lot to catch up on but graduated at age of 23

friend in DE said Chincoteague Island just evacuated due to flooding

I picked a number of tomatoes this morning, most only starting to turn, wanted to pick them before they cracked from too much water.

In my language there are 2 words which can be used for those things
this wreath; used at celebration like here and also at funeral; crown, like queen might literally have on her head - diadem, or crown as describing royal power; corona; corolla.
I really had to think for a while which means what in my case 😁

I mean - this is nice tradition. It might outdated as quite common owner doesn't visit construction site. Or even there is no more such thing as sole owner. Manager of funds is just chasing his quarter bonuses and don't give a **** what goes around. Ultimate goal is to get job done few bucks cheaper and that's it. At least that is what I see here.
But still, have noticed that some very big logistic parks or office buildings are celebrating this. IMHO - mainly for marketing, to make some buzz in media, that soon some areas will be free to rent
