From the Author of Future Jobs. Technology is changing all the rules for jobs and careers. Workers without 21st century skills can become as obsolete as 8 track tapes.

The walking dead are those who hope to retire before they have to learn the technical skills of their changing field (think telephone workers of the 80s who worked with copper wire, and didn't want to learn fiber optics and programming).

The techno peasants are in denial about the changing job scene (think coal miners)

Well, that's old school. Not saying you are wrong. I was raised the old school way. Heck I ran with scissors, drank from a garden hose, and talked to strangers, and worked like a mule most of my life.
But today's kids see the world differently. Most of them view hard labor as something to avoid. I saw it as way to make lots of money but todays kids have money making opportunities we never dreamed of. They buy and sell stuff on the internet. They deliver people and things with their own car. And they minimize their expenses for housing and food by living at home. It's a different world today, we have to realize our values are not their values. I didn't raise any kids so I'm not shouldering any of the blame

ok, but have you ever eaten yogurt past it’s spoilage date? LOL

Yeah I understand THAT, but what’s going to happen when they need to do work on their own properties eventually and they didn’t make a fortune typing keys on the cell phone?

Heck I can deliver things with my car, too. That aint nuthin special….

It don’t look good to me. I don’t see us fighting off too many enemies in a war with the bunch we been raising lately.

The good news is there’s still some out there willing to work, but I still think there’s too many concerned with their social media and facial piercings.

Good for you! Some of us are too crotchedy and mean for that, hence the need for robots.

Robots is never having to say you're sorry.

In my work zone, there are 5 people. 4 of use will retire within 1 year of each other in about 5 years. So we told the young guy he's going to be in charge of a robot as more things are automated. And the robot will be in a union, so every time he tells it to do something it will tell him in a computer voice "SORRY, I'M ON BREAK." and then laugh maniacally at him.

I work in a tech job, and we're basically full remote now. My department is a mix of white, chinese, and indians. And I like everyone I work with. They're nice and hard working people, and at the end of the day, we make great products.

However, there is a reason that my department is not all indian, and none of them are overseas. I just interviewed an indian with a PhD in engineering last week for a software engineer II position, and he did not get the job. While there are exceptions to every rule, indians, as a whole, are fairly timid. They are generally not brave or exploratory. They are hard workers but once they hit a wall it's full stop. They have very few problem solving skills because they are not brave or exploratory because they are timid. It's their culture, they were raised this way and lived this way in their country. Then they come here and try to get jobs. And they do get jobs, they work hard for cheap. But they're like a computer. They will do exactly what you tell them to do, but if you forgot to account for an issue, they will not account for the issue when they get to it.

I also have a fair mix of indians. Some have been here since the 90's, and 00's, and 10's. The ones that have been here since the 90's are considerably more brave, take risks, and are basically what I call white-washed. They also eat red meat, which I think helps. And the ones from the 00's are better than the ones from the 10's, and so on. The longer they're here, the more they become immersed in the American culture, the better they are at problem solving because they are less timid.

They typically start their education in india, get to a bachelors or masters, then come to America and get their masters or PhD in related field. They strictly read the books, memorized the content, and filled out the test answers, and received a passing grade. They barely understand the information they're being tested on though, which also negatively affects their problem solving skills.

I've worked with well over a hundred indians in my 20 year career, and I can honestly say this rings true for all of them. I haven't worked with as many chinese, but I have a fair amount, and this rings true for them as well so far.

And this is why we will never outsource everything overseas. I won't even hire someone overseas, they must be state-side and a US Citizen to even get my consideration. Just because I know I need people that I can do the work. I don't want to hire someone with a PhD that I then have to teach everything. His PhD is worthless in my eyes, his 12 years of school is wasted. He could have done 4 years with a BS and 8 years work experience and he would have been infinitely better off.

I've worked with many PhDs and doctoret level people here who are a dime a dozen when you live in a university town. Some have there heads on and great, others can't figure out how the door handle works. But they still like to mention how smart they are 🤔....

Considering that robot is smarter than you, I doubt it. Have you ever seen the movie Ex Machina? Interesting take on female robots made to serve men.

Yep a whole slug of my company are now 60+ and retiring.

Dependable and no drama... of course there are some 30 something very good too.

What I have noticed is it's rare for a 30
something to seek any type of management... in fact we have had otherwise good employees leave when faced with management responsibilities...

Most simply want to come and do their shift

I get really frustrated at the Amazon chat bots. They take you in circles, and you can’t get what you need.

sometimes the rewards do not outweigh the additional risk

I think this is the reality...

Among friends and family I know several that stepped back from management saying the same...

I had enough of management and high stress in my last job of 30 years. Now I'm basically a handyman. Light electrical, plumbing, carpentry and HVAC. I putter around all day fixing stuff or doing preventative maintenance.

What would I be doing if I was retired? Puttering around fixing stuff and doing preventative maintenance. :ROFLMAO:
