I have one of those Westinghouse WGN 9500s, and so does Daugen. He had problems with his switch, but I have not. Built a shed for it, and put a good amount of ventilation, plus stove pipe for the exhaust.

Portable gens are noisy…..but a nice noise when its cold and dark Powerless night. The only time i hear complaints about them is when there quiet during a cold and dark powerless noght.
Amen. I have a 3600 RPM "screamer" that everyone complains about. I have zero complaints about it. It runs, it powers the things in the house I need it to power and it was at the right price point.

As long as I change the oil and fire it up every couple months it seems to just work...

I'm also affected by the frequent and sometimes long outages here in the Sierra foothills. Generator is needed for well water and to prevent food spoilage.
I made sure to get one with clean (<5% THD) output to protect all the electronic devices that run off it. Higher distortion power can overheat electronics due to high levels of harmonics.

Twice tried to get an electrician to install a while house transfer switch in order to have 240V for the well pump, and no extension cord rats nest. Twice they flaked. So now I'm using a suicide cord plugged into the (unused) electric dryer outlet.
I'm religious about preventing backfeed into the mains, and about not having hot prongs exposed.

Edit: At the time I needed it, generators were hard to get. I wanted dual-fuel, settled on gasoline. Turns out, the aviation gas I get from the local airport has a 5 year storage life! I buy it because it's non-ethanol. I'll never go 5 years between outages. Lucky if I go 5 months!

Looks very nice Genny shade.😂😂😂

Recently, I installed a SUPCO SPP-6 Super Boost Start Capacitor on a 5 ton heat pump to easily start.
10 days ago, there was a power outage in my area, I tried to run It with the Firman generator.
But only one time was barely running with a super booster.

It makes me quite surprised. 😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️

Also, I have a 2hp 220V well water pump system. It consumes a lot of wattage when it starts and runs.

That is the reason I replaced a slightly larger size generator. (More than that size of portable generator will be stationary that I don't want)

I haven't tried with new westinghouse generator for AC yet.
Even if the new generator doesn't run AC, I will still be more comfortable than before.

Time will tell... 😜😜

Luckily I didn't have to add the well pump or septic pump into the equation. Village takes care of water pressure (so far so good) and my septic is all gravity.

First thing i would do is lose the super boost capacitor. Best way to damage unit. Go look here

these remove something like 70% of starting loads on ac units

Actually pretty easy to wire your house for a portable generator. Lock out switch, breaker, Romex cable and the box.

I'm into mine for around 1500 and that's with the new generator

I made this interlock for the main panel because it is not available anywhere.
Also, installed this generator power inlet.
Works really well...
