What's wrong with Canadians?

The pool might not freeze. but the sprinklers might.

I was living in Las Vegas when they had the first day on record when it didn’t get above freezing. Nearly every house, office, or building of any kind has a sprinkler system that they don’t winterize, and that is above ground. At that time they were still sprinkling bushes in the middle of the freeway, and that froze, burst and then flowed across I-15 turning into ice. And, a fun time was had by all.

The second night the sprinkler manifolds all started bursting as they froze. Most folks had no idea how to turn their sprinkler system off. Some installed by handymen and homeowners didn’t have separate shut offs, other than the one for the entire house.

The Water District, sent any employee who could walk out with valve wrenches, to shut off the meter to any house that had water running to the gutter. There had been so much water flowing that reservoirs were emptying and they no longer had fire flow pressure in parts of the valley.

I was living in a rental, going to college. The first night, when they warned it might freeze, I went out and put my biggest Coleman cooler upside down over the sprinkler manifold, unplugged the sprinkler clock, and plugged in a drop light with a 100-Watt bulb and put it under the cooler with the sprinkler manifold, then threw an old sleeping bag over the top. The Landlord called to say he couldn’t get over to fix my sprinklers for a couple of days. He was very relieved when I told him that the pipe didn’t freeze. And, when I told him that we had already dug down and installed a shutoff valve on the feed line, he took $200 off the rent. Many beers, and much pizza were had by all…
Be very careful the pool pipes don’t freeze, break, and flood your basement!

No basement in Vegas. No crawl spaces either. The whole place is built on caliche, and basements cost more per square foot, than sticks on a slab.

Anyone remember the History Channel's show about the ice roads that showcased one of the first drivers to do it? Talking about the cold he said something to the effect of "dang" cold and followed that up by saying "gd" cold, lol!

I used to haul ceder fence post out of Canada. Even the palletized bundles could take some time to load. Their blood is not any thicker than ours, they would take plenty of warm up breaks.

Lastly, what drives me crazy is the Weather Channel naming snow storms.

I lived in Vegas from 87-92. Wife went to HS and college there. MIL still lives there..

There was a hard freeze (sub 20s) in '90 or '91 that blew out the anti-siphon valves on sprinkler systems. You had to run the pool pump 24/7 and even then they advised putting wood or something in the water to absorb the pressure if it iced over.

I worked way out on West Sahara (at the time it was a out as far out as the city went). The sprinkler systems in the medians did not have freeze protection, so they sprayed all over the road. One morning there were probably 4-5 accidents as idiots got to the icy patch and hit their brakes.

They do that here when bridges freeze over. Someone always panics and slams on there brakes. They slide till they are off the bridge and then suddenly stop.

Everyone following behind them stacks up like an accordion.

I'm 70 years old and don't want to waste my final years or days figuring out what all that added crap means. That's why I usually go to the internet rather than the TV weather "show".

The problem with Canadians is that they are too darn smart. Ask a Canadian to name all fifty of the US States and most can do it. Most "Americans" can't name more than three Canadian Providences. :)

I played college lacrosse with some Canadians and my son plays D1 with some Canadians.
Ill never forget a long bus ride we had to play St.Joe’s one year. We arrived at St Joe’s U. Some clown started heckling us and the Canadian players (playing for an American team!) stormed off the bus and just pummeled these poor guys into submission!! Lol it was like a scene out of “Slapshot”!
Those boys were proud of our American team even though they were Canadian. Never had so much fun as hanging out with those boys drinking Molsons and brawling anyone who looked at us funny. Crazy, fun loving good ol goons! Fit right in with us. Miss ‘em!
Got some great collegiate boxing stories involving them, too.

That Canadian trend on weather surprises me because people need actual temps. However, when I want to brag to my wife, it's great to tell her it feels like 110 I've been out working in. But I can make that up!

TV and radio news folk do talk fast and have a sense of urgency. I think it keeps an audience more riveted. I also think they've gotten more hyper.

When Hurricane David hit our county in Florida in 1979, my Dad had a heart attack. He was 10 miles inland so flooding was unlikely, though wind could be bad. He'd always said when we lived on the beach that a direct hit at high tide would take us out. Turned out, he was right many years later. But David turned out not so bad.

Now I am old. And noticing that I get much more anxious when something like "snowmaggeden" is on the way. I decided during the news buildup for it last week that I would avoid TV and radio weather and just use the print report online.

Only disgusting if you prefer men over women....
Some folks just don't care for erotic dancing...personal values and no need to criticize...
Now me, a 10 year Navy vet and 100% pervert...I loved strip clubs back in the day
Of course, I'll probably go to Hell when I pass on...

I guess you know, my brain won't be satisfied until I try to write out the names of the fifty states.

So you're saying it does work to slam on the brakes when on the ice? 😄

Speaking of bridges, i had a rig that apparently had a slightly sprung frame. I remember the first time i drove over a frozen bridge on the highway, it made a little jerk as it transitioned from dry pavement to ice on the bridge, it slowly drifted to the lower side of the bridge. Fortunately, nobody else around, but scared the heck out of me.

Dave Schultz, Dave Brown, etc. boys liked to brawl

I don't know much if anything wrong with Canadians; I do know that you gotta be tough to live through those kinds of Winters, and I do know a certain percentage of our celebrities have Canadian roots.

I do know one thing that is right with Canadians; when the 9-11 disaster happened, they pitched in, handled our air traffic, landed them all safely, and took care of the stranded passengers like they were family. This tells me what they are made of. Thank you Canada!
