36°F and cloudy this morning, only going up to 43° today. More rain expected this afternoon.

We made up for the poor meal the previous evening by making Navajo tacos for dinner last night. I cooked up four pounds of taco meat (we didn't use it all ) and The Wife made some fry bread. Delicious. It was the oldest stepson's first time eating them, and he seemed to enjoy it. For those who don't know, a Navajo taco is essentially a loaded tostada made on Native American fry bread instead of a fried tortilla. We first encountered them while eating at the Cameron Trading Post in Cameron AZ during our 2011 trip to the Grand Canyon. Theirs was big enough to feed four or five people. Ours last night were more personal sized.

Wife was hemming some pants for one of the boys last night and had the television on in her sewing room, as she frequently does just for background noise. It was on some satellite channel carrying a show called The Osbournes Want To Believe, which is Ozzy Osbourne, along with his wife and son, reviewing video footage of supposed hauntings, aliens, and monsters, and then bickering over whether or not it's real. I have to admit, it was mildly funny ... mostly due to trying to understand what on earth Ozzy was saying. What a mess that guy is. The entertainment value wore off quickly, though. It reminded me of Howard Stern; initially funny, but boringly repetitive and predictable. I like reminding myself every so often why I don't watch TV.

We use vegetable oil.

I am willing to admit that frying in lard or tallow is definitely not the healthiest choice, but the flavor of fried foods took a serious freefall when it became politically incorrect to use it any more back in the '80s. I miss the days when McD's fries actually tasted good without a ton of salt on them.

Morning all, 41 and cloudy rainy.
Trip to NYC yesterday, got to see the sites. City was very empty compared to pre-covid.
Lots of free C19 testing sites on the streets, along with lots of vans selling pot....

Kyle-I have the M18 pole saw. I like it for the bog standard chain/bar. Is in sections vs. sliding pole so can go lighter when I don't need the length. Oiler a bit less than it should be. Reliable with metal gears and drives on everything.
Batteries are amazingly expensive. 10" chain makes it work on larger branches. Good reach, just ok balance.

PJS - sounds like an awful dinner- did you at least get to catch up with everyone with all that extra time?

Fry bread big in the state parks down AZ and Utah. Never tried it myself, has milk in it.

High tea was fine at Bergdorff-Goodman's - I just had a shrimp cocktail while the wife and son did the (expensive) finger sandwiches and scones etc.
Plaza downstairs was closed, so no Plaza this year.
My wife and her family used to do Plaza high tea every year. That place is locked down since the hotel got bought and made into mostly apartments.

Tree was huge, Saks had the whole building in lights with sound synch.
Spent some time in Lego shop with life size lego taxi etc.

Dinner at a Brazilian place. New Jersey transit was kind enough to cancel many trains due to their usual ineptness.

Home late and groggy,
This is down the street from the building where I met my wife in midtown.

I used to work every now and then at that building behind the tree. Made famous by SNL.

Wife asked if I could make the next light sphere similar to this one (don't think so....)

Side trip to Macy's - food court and most of basement closed off. Not too many Xmas items for sale.

Yes, we did, Ken. That was the reason we found ourselves already over an hour waiting, sitting there gabbing. Great conversations, less-than-great food.

65°F and .01 inches rain.

Didn't like the color of the stain for the cabinets. Tried and had to remove. Trip to Home Depot yesterday afternoon and hopefully I have a better color for today.

42F and cloudy @ 11:30, heading up to a high of 47F. Still looking like we'll have unseasonably warm temps for the start of the new year.

Woman remarked earlier "Well, you've really got them out at the feeders this morning." ... apparently birds and squirrels.

She ventured out and got a little grocery shopping done yesterday, started raining just as she got back.

I got some paperwork and filing done yesterday, will be more of that today ... along with some emails.

Plus (hopefully) a haircut ... getting to the point I can hardly stand it. Debating whether to shave off the beard as well.

Noticed several of the zinnia seeds have begun to sprout ... they are starting to push up the top layer of vermiculite forming little mounds. These are the ones I planted - Pumila Violet:

It will be nice to have some bright color during the gray months, if the bloom. If they don't, well at least they have a head start for this coming year.

(Re-)Watched another couple episodes of The Expanse last night ... but no marathon ...

PJ, I forgot what I bought at the store, some specialty pierogie (or something) and when I ate
it thought wow this tasted homemade. And almost too good. Yup. Lard on the ingredient list.
Let's face it, many of us love the taste of burning fat or we wouldn't eat steaks.
Like you, I'll stick with canola or olive oil. And only as little of that as possible.

went to across street neighbor and helped her adjust her sling. She got a new shoulder yesterday and was doing quite well,
a bit giddy still from the good drugs. Her partner is severely crippled from a really bad motorcycle accident, a local police officer, and he
can't drive. So I'm trying to help out. She had the sling right; was fretting over an optional shoulder strap she didn't need.
She was comfortable with one strap and when I told her that's all I recently had, she looked relieved. Apparently the two of them had spent hours
trying to get this strap on they didn't need at all. I took them a couple of apples, as I usually do.
She had the same surgeon I had. Head of the dept and very good, thankfully

time to work on some carpets. Have a new Hoover carpet cleaner I have to set up and use after I vacuum thoroughly.
All area rugs, all new and already showing whatever I tracked in over the last year.
Side benefit is shampooing the carpets adds some much needed moisture to inside air.

Air frying would make the content less fatty and a plant based milk substitute would help us who are lactose intolerant.

that sounds really good Don. One teaspoon of mayo doesn't seem like much for a whole batch.
air fryer only way to go, most of us don't deep fry.
Not sure i have room for an air fryer as my kitchen is so small my friends gave me a collapsible collander set for Christmas...

ah, fried or deep fried. Indians cooked in pans of some kind I'm sure.
But go to those fairs and all kinds of stuff being deep fried.

Just started home, got 1/4 mile up road and flat tire, off the rim flat. Had to change in muddy mess. Got dummy on, dad brought a couple blocks of wood and cardboard up.


Sitting at tire shop. They said too bald to fix (it’s not that bad) but they have a couple used ones same size.
I have 4 new tires sitting at home at Costco, but they couldn’t do till next week. And I need to get back to MD.

True ... just be aware that some of the rapid home tests may be less effective in detecting Omnicron.

Good afternoon. Apart from a blustery wind it seems very quiet here too today, especially now our son and partner have returned home. After the rain stopped I did a bit of welding which didn't go quite as intended. Never mind, I have come to realise that one of the best parts about being retired is having plenty of spare days to sort out mistakes...

Don, congrats on the virtual handshake, I was expecting it to be for your milk-less milkshakes.

BEF, shame about the flat tire. At least you got to spend some extra time with your dad !

So, did everything turn out fine after drying the Ranger? (this is the one that got flooded?)

No, it was the Honda that got flooded. It is 100% again. Because it is summer here it dried very quickly and no swampy smells. I have a 750 mm fan and opened all the doors and aimed the fan in. Fitted a new air cleaner as the other one got soaked and was original.

We have used only peanut oil for the deep fryer for several years, and the only other oil we buy and use is olive oil.

However, the younger of our two daughters gave us a monstrous air fryer for Christmas. We plan to try it out for the first time tomorrow.

I believe they are mostly pan fried, Drew. That's how I've seen it done, and that's how we do it. I suppose in a restaurant with a deep fryer, that's probably the easier route. Going to have to try the air fryer next time.
