About an hour ago my wife got a text from my deceased mother's number. The text said, "I thought I would give you my new number".

She freaked for a minute.

Thirty minutes later she got a phone call from the same number. It was from a friend of hers that had changed cell phone services and had been assigned my deceased mother's old number. Mom died October 20th.

My wife was very hesitant to answer the phone.

Had to call my sisters and ask them to guess who Deb had got a call from. One thought it was funny, the other didn't. That is the kind of thing that my mother would have laughed about for days.

Life goes on.

Phone numbers did not get reused in the past so quickly. No cell phones, fax machines back then either. That would be freaky getting a close relative's number like in your case. Jon

Got my first cellphone in 2008, the number they gave me apparently had previously belonged to someone with credit issues, for about the first year I received calls from collection outfits and credit unions trying to collect money.

Similar thing happened to me kind of. My new employer issued me a cell phone. Received a text late one night, 'Missing you so much, I really need your advice.'. I replied, sorry this is a new number for me. the girl replied that it was her deceased mother's number and she texted it as if talking to her. it gave her comfort. she then tried to call me several times. being married i blocked the number as it started to get wierd.

In the "old days" of telco service, it would entirely depend on how full your telco exchange was, on whether or not a number got reused quickly or not. Also if the new customer opted for the more expensive "unlisted number" (remember those?).

But I can't say it wouldn't freak me out to get a phone call from my dead mother (gone 5 years now).

My mom passed away in April. Her Poltergeist busts our chops at least weekly. I consider it a blessing. My mom actually busts my wife’s chops more often than mine. My wife was my moms home care nurse her last few months and my wife chats with her almost daily to this day. Please consider it mom watching over you. I do.

Ive seen a virus or app get on phones and get access to the phone list. Scammers then fake a call from those same numbers.
My cousin got a call from our deceased aunts number. He is a bit superstitious and refused to answer. When he called me to tell what happened he jokingly asked me what I thought she wanted. I thought he was gonna die when I told him, probably ice water.

I once rented a cell phone due to an urgent pending business deal.
LOL, the previous user had obviously been a hooker based on the crazy calls I was getting.
Had fun explaining them to my better half.

As mine would have. :ROFLMAO:

Kinda surprised the number got reassigned that quickly? And to a friend!!! Guess I never really thought about it....

Our first telephone (obviously not a cell phone number) was 55F23. I think at that time, it would have remained with the house until it was torn down. 55 was our number (Meaning two longs) on Farm line 23.

Had that happen when we bought this house (except it was a landline #). After a few months of constantly hearing from collection agencies and other irate creditors we got a new # assigned, had the phone company give us the one that had been out of service the longest. No more problems.

On the other side of the coin, when I retired I turned in my company cellphone and apparently the company released the number. A year or so later I heard from a former co-worker that he'd tried to call that number, forgetting I didn't have it anymore. A rather irate person answered, and informed him that he wasn't me. Maybe 6 mo later same former co-worker called that number again, and got a different irate person saying he wasn't me either. Guess I was popular...

Curiously, what's a farm line? Another name for party line?
