Poor people don't pay road tax. They ride a bicycle. That's why they use tax money to install bike lanes and bicyclists pay no road taxes. It's not very practical though to ride a bicycle 15 miles to get groceries.

Lol, yeah I guess bikes are an option for the “extremely poor”. I was referring more to the “great unwashed” like myself. Dirty hands, trucks, older vehicles, etc.

Yeah, well you may be waiting a long time my friend.
If I have a 60,000lb truck and drive it 10,000 miles a year, I still pay the Commonwealth of PA $3,400/yr for registration. If my competitor has a 50,000lb truck and drives it 200,000 miles a year, he pays $2,900 a year for PA registration.
I bet his truck damages the roads and wears them out a lot more than my truck, yet he pays less than I do.
I agree with you the technology exists to make all these fees more fairly paid, but it won’t happen.

I would really like to see what EVs cost without subsidies and an appropriate road tax.
I bet the purchase looks a lot less attractive.

Paying for roads with a gas tax is another example of a good idea broken by bad execution. With EVs taking over, probably the best way is to just tax the vehicle up front when purchased for whatever road tax the vehicle would be subject to (or the govt needs to collect) over its lifetime and get rid of the gas tax altogether. That way ICE or EV pays the same and the rich folks buying expensive new vehicles would in practice pay a little more in tax than the guy buying used.

Maybe in your state. In my state, road taxes go into a dedicated highway fund, and can't be spent on anything else. The feds, of course, scam everything they can get their hands on.

Why such high taxes just on gasoline for road taxes and not taxes on electricity? EV owners drive on the same roads so ratchet up electric bills across the board "Just in case" someone uses their electricity to power an EV? Maybe the same should go for anyone using solar power since they do not "own" the sun's rays. It would seem to me the sun is owned by the public. Not unlike here on my property where the state owns the water that floats on top of MY tidelands. The precedence is there for the gobament owning the sun's rays and maybe the general public should be compensated for those using those rays. The preceding logic is yours.

You paid up front for your (subsidized) solar installation, so taxing it to recover the subsidy is reasonable. I think our national infrastructure should be self-supporting based on user fees. If our bridges were toll bridges, they wouldn't be falling down.

Likely no jurisdiction on the planet uses the revenue just for Road Maintenance. I can't get my taxes back on what I use in my lawnmower, chainshaw, weedeater etc.....

Yes, you can. It requires careful record keeping, but you can recover road taxes on gasoline when you file income taxes each year. Mostly it's not worth it, but when my dad was using a couple thousand gallons a year on the farm he got those taxes back. Off-road diesel is tax free.

Okay, EV owners in Oregon pay taxes by the mile... then using the $10/gallon gas logic, those EV fees should be tripled. That would go a long way towards reducing traffic congestion. Heck, make it a dollar a mile. I just do not believe that arbitrary outrageous government taxation is the way to solve anything.

In WA much of our tidelands are privately owned. I own out to extreme low tide. City and out of state people don't understand that and trespass all the time. I never fuss about it, most people are just out for a walk. The incoming tide always solves the problem a few hours later .
