It's about 80F outside and just got done mowing 7 acres.. The transmission felt hot so I hit it with the IR thermometer (had been off for 5 mins or less by the time I found the gun) and got a max temp of 205F. Is that within 'normal' range for that amount of work, or running too hot?

I don't know what's normal bu that sounds high for so little time working. Do you have a hydraulic oil cooler? Check that the passages have not become blocked with dust or whatever.

This statement is based on info that I gathered from 30 years ago. But things may have changed.
Hydraulics should not get over a 195 F. It's not necessarily a problem with the oil but over time O-rings will get brittle much faster.
I definitely would search for a reason why it's getting that hot.
Your dealer may also have a more correct answer to your temp.

I have always heard tractor hydraulic fluid normally gets 100 deg f over ambient. My previous L3410 regularly hit 180-185 in the summer, and I'm sure it pushed 200+ at times.
I suspect your 205 degrees is normal during heavy PTO work. You could always add a cooling fan to the transmission cooler if your machine has one.

A pic or two of the transmission and fan would help us understand better what you are faced with on your 2305.

Mowing 7 acres with a 60C deck would take 4-6 hours so it will get hot. Your tractor doesn't have an "oil cooler". The transmission is air cooled. Check the fan on the rear of the driveshaft for broken blades or if it spins freely on the driveshaft spline.

As jsb2b points out, the fan must be intact and properly spinning on the input shaft. Also, be sure the trans cooling fins are not caked with mud or loaded with dust or grass clippings.
So yes, the 2305 doesn't have a transmission oil cooler. I did just change the oil and used low viscosity (probably go to regular) since it doesn't get that hot here (or I don't mow when it's real hot) and I use it in the winter. The fan blades are in good shape, the fan is securely mounted, and the tractor is very clean from grass debris. It takes me about 2.5-3 hours to mow at warp 9.. Brakes weren't on.. Appreciate all the input. Will plan to call my JD dealer this week and see what they say.
