I ask bc it dawned on me and when i look up stats they seems to show digging force.

I’d like to know for my own knowledge to understand limitations.

but for a compact tractor, in this case it will be a Branson 3620h how much can a backhoe lift?

i wouldn’t want to be maxing it out ever, so it would be good to know roughly what a compact hoes lifting capacity actually is.

It depends if the boom is in the close position or farther out but not a lot.

There should be charts somewhere. Every backhoe or excavator I have used had them. It depends greatly on how close the load is to the machine but I can tell you on a compact tractor it won’t be much. I had a full size Deere 18,000lb backhoe and on several occasions I lifted the front tires off the ground picking up things with the backhoe that were not overly heavy.

If you fill the loader bucket with dirt?

Very generally, Backhoes can lift approximately 50% of what FEL on same tractor can lift.

Only way to know is to look up the backhoe specs and pressure available from the tractor.

My Deere 310 would lift a 5000 pound block out to about 3/4 reach on the boom.

Kind of, sort of like asking how much can ones sister bench press. lol

FWIW here is the chart for my BH, Model BT1000A. I presume the bold straight lines represent the boom and dipper stick at full extension so that the "lifting force" was measured at the bucket pins. I am sure there are other, arcane rules in SAE J31. Perhaps it specifies the BH is fixed so that weight in the FEL is not considered. I was somewhat surprised that the minimum was not at full horizontal reach. I have never moved test weights, but I have exceeded its capacity i.e. found immovable objects. (BTW a similar pictogram for the loader shows just over 1500kg (3307 lbs) at 500 mm forward of the pivot pin at 500 mm (18") high.)

Mine was a 310SJ 4WD extendahoe. It would lift whatever you wanted but I remember one time lifting a steel flatbed for a dually pickup and it tipped back until the flatbed was back on the ground

I guess, whether you want to lift somthing with the stabilizers out, or lift it and drive around are two entirely different matters.

Very true or if you want to be able to swing it out to the side or not.

Lifting heavy loads is always potentially dangerous. Especially for those with little experience, maybe no concept of the forces and riisks involved and maybe just totally out of their element. The simplistic OP question kind of aludes to that possibility.

Watch the seemingly endless YT Crane fail videos. Even the "PROS" get it wrong apparently way too often.

Start to give it a little juice you will know pretty quickly wether it will do it or not.

Now do you see why it's better to start out explaining what your intent is?

I can tell you I dug up a small Cedar tree with no problem, but when I went to move the tractor to a new location with the tree and dirt in the BH bucket, things got real unfun, real quick.

It will always lift less than you want it to. (Theory of over optimistic expectations)

It will lift more curling the bucket than the dipper because the cylinders are the same but leverage is much more advantage on the curl function.

But it's never enough.

I have a John Deere 990 with a 300CX FEL and an 8B BH. The specs on this page Specifications - 8B Backhoe talk about the lifting power with the "Boom lift ability (dipper arm and boom extended, lifting with boom cylinder only, weight attached at bucket pivot) 313 kg and 689 lbs. (Just a note: on this page they have the kg value and the lbs value switched but I have corrected them on this post) As has already been said in some of the responses to your post, it really depends on how close you can get it and then you will be able to lift a whole lot more. I have lifted some pretty big rocks that my FEL had a tough time lifting and it will lift roughly with some very light weight forks about 1600 lbs. Once you get it in close that is where you have the power. the dipper stick is pretty amazing what it can do when it is in close and you move it away. The 8B is an old BH design for the earlier JD CUT's. Today's BH's have a lot better control and power. I could always use more power and better fine control but it really works well and I am thankful to have it.
