M5-111

Our new M5-111 was delivered yesterday. Ready for Spring to get here so we can get it outside and see how she does. Its almost identical to our M8540 except for the DPF and DEF systems. Our 8540 has 3400 hours with no problems beside a few cables that have froze/locked up. We hope that this one will be as dependable.

I investigated the M5-111HDC24 a year or so ago but decided that I could not deal with DEF.

Hoping that the emissions will be trouble free! At least we have 5 years of warranty to get us through. I believe Kubota has “improved” some of the parts associated with the DEF system. I didn’t like the regens on my 6.4 but I think they will be a little easier to manage on a tractor. I do like that the tractor gives you a percentage of how full the DPF is.

The emission control systems are here to stay, some people like new tractors, some like to keep their old ones, to each their own. I kinda like a new tractor, they even smell good inside the cab! It will be fine, some people worry too much, kinda like being afraid of their own shadow.

I've got a 10 year old F250, the only problem I've had is all the stupid sensors for emissions going bad. It's not about being afraid, it's about the hassle of an engine going into limp mode 50 miles from your house while towing a trailer because one of three exhaust temp sensors is not linier with the others (ask me how I know). It's adding parts to fail and making it harder for operators to repair themselves, especially when away from their shop.

Both my tractors have emissions on them, their purchases were a deliberate decision knowing things will likely go wrong that would not be an issue with an older tractor.

Oh...10 year old F250, not a good year for F250s. When my customers ask me which is the best new diesel pickup to buy, I tell them brand doesn't matter, buy the brand that has your favorite color and smells the best in the cab. They look at me like I am nuts, then I finish the advice...trade the blasted thing off before the warrant is out and let some other schlub pay to fix it. I never get too far from home with my tractors.

Do you have fluid in your tires? What PSI are the back tires at? Mine is sitting around 10 with the fluid and the weights. I’m thinking about upping them to 15.

I like clean air and clean water. Who doesn't?

I just wish the morons at EPA would let the engineering catch up with their pipe dreams. They force OEM to put it on the equipment (at OUR expense) and the private individual buyer has to pay to debug it when it's out of warranty.

EPA could not care less.

Yep! 100% correct. Happened to me. Sensors are rusted into the bung they are screwed into thanks to road salt and can be very tedious to extract, too.

No I don't have any fluid in the rear tires at this point, so far I just have the cast iron discs and three sets of wheel weights. I like my tractors heavy and my chics light! I air them up to between 12 and 15 PSI, it depends on what sort of a load I have on the back of the tractor. I do have the 18.4 Goodyear radials. They are great if you do any highway travel. I gotta tell ya, I do like this tractor, it is the M5-091 an absolute joy to operate which replaced an M7060, that is a long story that starts with a fuel system design problem. I hope you enjoy your machine.

I see it as a delight to be able to have a new tractor to operate, it smells good in the cab, it's shinny and down right groovy, it may prove to be a bit of a challenge to deal with the emission systems, never know, as I see it the pluses out weigh the minuses.

I have a background in diagnostic testing, emission control testing and development of emission controls that spans longer than I realize, until I look at the calendar, holy schmidt I have done this for a long time! I suppose my perspective just might be a little different than most.

As one who designed engine control computers for a major US auto maker in one of my previous lives, I suspect that my perspective is also different than that of most.

No, the federales are not going to relax emissions controls anytime soon (certainly not now), but the current situation is not sustainable and this too shall pass.
