Good morning!!!!

Good morning, our short dry spell has come to an end. We were really lucky yesterday to be able to get on with spreading and make a cow muck mountain disappear without tractors sinking in too deep.

A good friend of mine is in his mid 50's, non smoker, not overweight and was a healthy, no-cares-in-the-world type until he caught Covid-19 in October. Within a few days of being tested he developed pneumonia and sank about as close to death as it gets. He is now out of hospital and was telling me on the phone yesterday how surreal it was to be laying in a hospital bed half conscious as the doctors discussed his case, the patient on his left having just died of Covid and it looking like he would be next. He ended up on a cocktail of experimental drugs and now from his voice I could not have guessed he had ever been ill, though he says he is constantly tired. His advice to me was to postpone the usual family Christmas, it is simply not worth the risk.

Glad he made it through.

Take care everyone !

And you too ...

Could you cast your own shower base out of concrete or morter, RS?

Possibly ... but doing so would mean ripping out the old base ... and then that will necessarily mean getting into the plumbing and pipe work for the drain. Since the base itself doesn't appear to be cracked or leaking I'd really prefer not to (the drain is old galvanized and/or black pipe)

OTOH, it would really suck to have the base crack and fail - which might be non-repairable and actually require replacement - AFTER I get the new tile work done. Sure something to think about.

So far, apart from the steel tile flange that's rotted out, the base seems solid. It appears that there are ways to handle the now missing tile flange ... but I'm still researching it.

If I did tear it out, I'd probably go with one of the newer solutions which involves mortaring in a manufactured foam board pan with the proper slope built into it, putting a liquid membrane on it and then just tiling over that.

It's pretty clear that's what was done in the shower here, then a pebble style tile laid over it. But it's also on a slab foundation, and wood might not be stiff enough to support one.:confused3:

Yeah ... the subfloor - especially if it's wood - has to be done correctly. Don't want things moving around. That's why I was relieved when I saw they had actually screwed the subfloor down rather than just nail it when I pulled the linoleum up. (They used normal straight blade wood screws ... probably state of the art at the time ...)

So I took it to be a good sign that they might have actually prepped it for tile when it was built. I do know that the subfloor in other parts of the house is NOT screwed down.

Master bath has pedestal sinks; drove me nuts until I found a chest of drawers that fit between them. Now I have a place for storage, and can use the top for bathroom appliances and the like. But would really like to redo with a cabinet running the length of the room, with double underslung sinks on top.

The vanity in the main bathroom here is just shy of 8' long by about an inch (it's a long narrow bathroom)

There's no doubt that having that much storage is very handy ... "we" are using all of it ... ... along with the entire top between the sinks ...

Good luck on your various projects ...

Got only an hour of mowing before it was raining too hard again. Oh well. Enjoyed rest of afternoon playing cards with wife and a couple of eggnogs. Half a shot of Fireball whiskey in eggnog is really good.
I'm partial to Devils Cut in egg nog myself.

Sorry and glad for your friend. Sounds like the experimental drug cocktail worked. I believe the numbers of dying here are very low now, especially if you consider underlying complications.

Great photos Ron and Bupps. Ron, maybe a nap in order today? My friend and I call it, taking two 5 minute naps, back to back.....Or testing eyelids for leaks.

Bupps, you staying long at the coast?

RNG, you would have been welcome at our place. Concerning electronics, pick your poison Lucas or Bosch. Hopefully you can figure it out. I hate troubleshooting wiring. It seems maybe the Steiner Beast's major issue stopping it, was the relay that ties into 5 wires....fortunately for me...so far. Are you adding panels??? Maybe these woodsmiths we have in our midst could give you inspiration for a full length counter.

Cooler and "spitting" here, mid 50's. Rains supposedly on the way. I pray we get some substantial rain. We need it, being in a substantial drought too. I saw where inundated Louisiana got a lot more un-needed rain.

Wifey made me coffee. Added chocolate and cream of course. Tasted great.

BEF, Looking for a brown paper bag for tomatoes...

Prayers you all have a good day, for those in need of healing, and for our country.

Good morning to all! Low of 29 last night, awoke to a 1/2" dusting of snow. Sun peeking through the clouds sure makes it pretty! No more snow is predicted, so just a slight inconvenience.

RS, when I remodeled our bathrooms a couple years ago, I was fortunate enough that the plumbing was "up to date", and was able to be capped and/or cut while the major stuff like tile was removed. Even so, the project took twice as long as expected, over 2 months... Granted, I was still working, so only able to dedicate 3 or 4 days a week to it. I was very glad to be done with it! I do like the style for sure! Modern retro.... if that is a thing:thumbsup::D

Drew, have fun in the shop today. You had mentioned getting additional supports.... these have worked exceptionally well for me:

Harbor freight has similar ones a few dollars cheaper, but the quality/weight was also less.
132 lb. Capacity Roller Stand
They really come in handy for a multitude of things.

Ron, beautiful pic of the bluebird! Almost looks like spring....

Buppies, nice sunrise pic... I must have missed it... are you in Florida?

Missed posting yesterday, woke up yesterday feeling like .... well ... doo-doo. Had terrible reflux thanksgiving night, waking me up almost aspirating.... probably ate way too much and way too many rich foods.....
Finally around noon, I made a run to Costco, but unfortunately they sold out of the 2 items that I specifically went there to get. Ordered them online from Costco last night.
This morning, I am feeling much, much better. I need to go out and get the shop heaters going.... then get joining up some boards. I don't want to run out of time making the chests.

Everyone have a great day!

Top,

Thanks ... that's good to know ...

I've got a number of other pieces of furniture (sofas, chairs, and box springs/mattress foundations) that need done as well ... so the info will come in handy.

Also have a couple of chairs I want to get reupholstered ... we had them done once, but they were sitting where they got a lot of sun and the UV seems to have caused a deterioration in the fabric. The cats don't help matters either ...

The Woman wants to toss them ... but I think they are decent quality furniture (and pretty comfortable, even though I don't sit in them much) and probably worth reupholstering.

Same on the love seats ... manufactured by Highland House of Hickory (NC) in November of 1980. Gonna make do with slipcovers on those for the time being though.

Thanks again.

I have the cat problem myself, and while I’ve got strong young men here I’m going to move my magic chair to the garage so I can upholster it.
I call it the magic chair because every time I sit in it I magically go to sleep.
