Good morning folks

22 now high in the low 40’s and getting cloudy as the day goes on. Supposed to get some rain tonight and tomorrow I hope the weather guessers are right.

Pick up grocery order this morning and fill the wife’s car with gas.

Yesterday was a nice warm day so I pulled the tractor out, topped up the fuel and gave everything a shot of grease it really didn’t need.

Not much planned for today just see what comes around.

Prayers for all
Enjoy your day everyone

52 going to 62...mostly cloudy but a nice pink sky right now...rain tonight.

Mostly, hope vertigo is better today. We saw a lot of Christmas decorations yesterday on our drive...wife wonders why so early, since she thinks we need to finish one holiday before starting another...I said many people are home due to C.virus and so they have spare time to do it, or some have such nice set ups they want more time to enjoy.

Never seen gophers here...a few groundhogs around until the coyotes get them, and of course chipmunks and moles/voles for our other regular underground dwellers.

Also am surprised no word from Rick in a while.

Good morning. 42 her heading to middle 50’s.

Hopefully today will go better than yesterday. Seems everything I touched yesterday was either broken or broke when I touched it.

Started with the leaf blower. I pushed down the lane, on the way back up I noticed fuel dripping from it onto my new blacktop. I turned the fuel shut off and kept it running until it quit. Turned out to be the fuel pump. It’s a Little Wonder with a Briggs engine and is probably close to 25 years old. I go to the parts store to get a repair kit for the pump, and not only is it not available, either is the entire pump. They give me a replacement kit, which I install according to the directions. All is good until I try to install the air filter housing which now interferes with the pump. A few rounds with the wiz wheel and I get it to fit. But now I notice that the muffler is loose, the gasket is blown and it’s missing a bolt. So it’s back to the parts store for a gasket. Removing the heat shield for access to the missing bolt, I see that it’s got a mounting ear broken of of it. So I braze that back together and reassemble everything, it works like new again.

Go to wash my hands in the shop sink, and notice my feet are in a puddle. Turns out the the nut attaching the tailpiece to the 50+ year old concrete sink has corroded away enough to leak profusely, but not enough to come off without cutting through it in two places with a dremel. Once it’s apart, it’s off to the hardware store for new parts. Got it all put together, now the floor stays dry like it should.

But now I can’t remember what I was going to do with the day......

good morning all. Cooler cloudy day today, high of 50 with rain coming in tonight.

I also agree on using a small brad nailer to tack pieces together while glue dries.
I think I'll go this route because the more I look at those exposed screws, the less I like it.
Now the birds don't care for sure...
I see brad nailers and pin nailers advertised, many are not expensive:
Metabo HPT Pin Nailer Kit, 23 Gauge, Pin Nails - 5/8" to 1-3/8", No Mar Tip - 2, Depth Adjustment, 5-Year Warranty (NP35A) - - Amazon.com
I looked at the Makita cordless models and not only are they expensive but the reviews aren't good.
Everyone seems to complain about these tools jamming all the time. This Metabo/Hitachi unit had Amazon's best rating and least number of bad reviews.

My 1hp Makita air compressor only puts out 2cfm at 90psi, max 135psi, but apparently these small air guns don't need much
I'm never going to be doing heavier construction work so don't think I need anything bigger than a pin nailer, even for bookcases.
I used to have a freeman air nailer and hardly ever used it, gave it to a friend for a big house reconstruction project and it worked well for him.
But it was big and heavy, I need light and small.

off to have coffee with my elderly MIL this morning, then back to build a few more birdhouses. Quaker Meeting still closed, though about a third of local Meetings are open. I have now donated a touchless hand sanitizer, forehead thermometer, masks and HEPA 13 filter to try to get powers that be to open up the building on Sunday. But with Covid going nuts now, again, and more..., my opinion is definitely in the minority. We have designated 64 seats in a building that holds 140, every other bench/pew, but folks are just too nervous it appears. We are so close to getting a vaccine I can understand the hesitation. But sure will miss Christmas carol sing. Singing of course is a big no no for disease spread.

Drinking first cup of hot coffee. 35° with light snow this morning. Heading to 37° with up to 3" accumulation. Snow is melting as soon as it hit ground. Brought Christmas tree in house yesterday. Will give me something to do on Thanksgiving Day. No plans for today unless weather guessers all of sudden get it right.

Thanks everyone for the prayers and well wishes for my son and his family.

I shop at Sam's Club because the one by me has lots of smaller packaged stuff. Lately they have been stocking vegetables from a place in Kingsville Ontario Canada. Their tomatoes are the tastiest I have bought in a long time.

Special prayers for Jim and his family.

Don, cute cat video. Not sure the cat looks like it is enjoying the water. Owl's around here are not very large. Eagles are the bird to watch out for in my area.

Drew, I like your bird house. If I am going to make more than 2 of something. I make a template to pre drill all the holes. No glue for outdoor items.

RNG, while many Sandhill Cranes do migrate south. These have been staying here year around. Neat tools in video.

Prayers and best wishes for everyone.

Good Morning All.

24 right now...high in the upper 30's and snow showers this afternoon.
Chores were done yesterday, but I think I'll spray the snow blower chute and housing...before I forget it. Oh yeah, got to grease the auger bearings too!!

Good morning, the temperature is 26°F and going to a high of 34. Wind ESE 6 mph. Mostly cloudy.

I have two trees laying across one of my snow dumps, so this morning I will tend to that. That will be my seat time for today.
After the dead falls, I don't know what I will get into.

Have a good safe day all

Good morning all. It is a lovely day here, despite being only a couple of degrees above freezing it feels a lot warmer, thanks to the wind and rain leaving us alone to enjoy a nice bit of sunshine for the next few hours.

One of the older tups has been fading for the last few days. He struggled to keep up with the other sheep yesterday as they moved between fields and this morning I found him on a south facing bank, looking as though he was also enjoying the warmth of the sun too, yet when I got up to him I realised he had gone in the night. I am sure many would envy his life, he was having a good time with the ewes right up to last week.

Sodamo, I am with you on battery powered nailers, the Ryobi has been great for me too.

Jim, so sorry to hear of your sister's problems. I do hope you can get her to realise she has nothing to blame herself for.

Drew, I don't do any near enough woodwork to contemplate buying a Festool domino machine, however that "floating tenon" method of joining does appeal and if you look on you tube there are plenty of people showing how to use a router table or home made jig for doing the same thing. It does take longer without the dedicated machine, however for those of us messing with wood for fun, that could be considered a benefit. As LS said, router tables are versatile and come in handy for lots of wood work, have you thought of buying or making one ?

If I am going to make more than 2 of something. I make a template to pre drill all the holes.

I can relate to that Ron, for some weird reason I often get more pleasure in making a jig than making the end product. :)

Eric, I think we see our own lives when we watch an animal born, live it’s life and pass.

53-65 today, cloudy and dank, rain tonight.

No Christmas decorations yet, just can’t get in the mood.

Sold the motor home, funny a nice local couple bought it after dealing with multiple out of towners, some drove long distance to see it. It’s extremely nice but mostly everyone wanted to beat him up on the price.

I’ll go feed the critters, get breakfast and then church service. Not sure what else.
Have a good one.

.

I couldn’t imagine a battery powered mailer being very practical, especially for cabinet work where you are in a shop with air available. The battery tool would be too clumsy.
My pin nailer is a Hitachi, and I don’t think that it has ever jammed. I use it all the time to hold glued joints together until cured.

For outdoor or maximum strength joints, I use LocTite PL premium urethane construction adhesive. It is dreadful to work with and clean up though. Gloves are a must. But it sure is sturdy. It also makes me appreciate how nice titebond is to work with.

Good Morning!!!! 48F @ 5:30AM. Sunny this morning then becoming cloudy during the afternoon. High 63F. Winds light and variable.
Still no rain in the 10-day.

Good to see you back at doing something you really enjoy, Drew! I would only go with another battery powered tool if it used the same Makita 18V batteries I already have. I have a couple of HF air nailers that are not very reliable, but I went cheap on them because I don't do much wood working. Purchased an inexpensive router table a long time ago, and it sits up on a shelf gathering dust.

Vertigo no fun on a bicycle, Bruce. Hope you get it under control soon.

I think we've all had days like that, Paul. :crossfingers: we don't have them very often.

More nice work, Ted. Your shop is so CLEAN! Hope you get some rain soon.

I saw a cartoon the other day with Lucy asking Charlie Brown why there are so many stupid people. His reply was that in the old days, stupid hurt, and all the nanny guards have taken the pain out of pulling stupid moves. There's a lot of truth to that...

Speaking of stupid, while I was outside working yesterday, I could hear the neighbor running a lawnmower through his weeds, kicking up plenty of rocks in the process. That's a good recipe for a fire, but we both lucked out and there wasn't any. At least none that I saw.

Managed to get all the solar panels moved yesterday, an inch at a time. Lots of trips round and round the rack, scooting one end of a string, then the other, lots of bending down under the low end; Mr. Back was not a happy camper. After lunch I went to add on the two new rails, and there were no bolts included to do it with. They're special bolts with the heads sized to fit in slots on the rails, so it's back to the contractor on Monday to see what they did with the bolts.:pullinghair:

Switched gears and fiberglassed the cracks in the motorcycle fairing, and gave the seat a couple coats of black vinyl dye. Then put the bucket back on the tractor and shoveled the ashes out of the camp fire pit. Treated myself to another campfire, and a nice glass of wine to ease the pain.

Plenty of stuff to do around here today, but I'm going to try to find something a bit less physical and let my hands and back recover a bit.

Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weekend...

Jim, more prayers.

Ron, beautiful pic.

Mostly, vertigo sucks....to put it bluntly. I pray yours subsides.

Was going to say something about the tup, but I believe I will leave it alone.... How old was he? How do you dispose of him? FEL?

Make fixture jigs all the time. Sometimes I find myself figuring out ways to avoid having to make them. Since all I do is prototype work.

Watered the pecan trees and tomatoes yesterday, got a small shower this morning. The little chihuahua doesn't want to get up and go outside in the wet. Still hiding in her velour blankey.

Coffee was good this morning. Wifey did a great job.

Miss visiting my mom. She's alone in her home, 91, and lonely.

Daughter will play bass today at church. 2 new songs to her, will have to read the tab sheets.

GT80 sitrep: Only has 30psi compression. Took the head and cylinder off to inspect. Couldn't see anything abnormal. Measuring with calipers seemed close enough. It had been bored with new piston and ring. The cylinder wall' honing was quite slick, and there are some very fine vertical scratches down lower near the skirt area. I'm thinking about taking it by a shop to let them hone it for just a few seconds with a good hone, to break the shine off. Prefer a sunnen type hone vs a bottle brush hone. The bore is at 47.5 mm and the piston skirt is about 47.4mm. Maybe a bit too much. Should be about .0015" But that is with calipers. My dial bore gage starts at 2" and goes up. I have some telescoping gages I guess I will have to break out.

Our high school football team lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs. We usually go further. Other team had a great defensive line and linebackers.

I'm at the point of ordering stuff for the Steiner. Just making a list and checking it twice.

Good morning to all! Low last night was 33, only going up to 49 today, still not bad.

Eric, sorry to hear about the tup... how many others are 'in line' for succession?

RNG----
Ted. Your shop is so CLEAN!
Well, it has only been clean as of the past 6-8 months. I have finally really gotten into the habits of both cleaning up as I go / or completing a task. Also, as soon as a project is done....clean it up! If I don't, then the mess just multiplies in magnitude... took a while to break the bad habits of just letting stuff lay around, or just adding to the pile to "take care of it later".
It's funny now that everything is in its place all the time, I can walk in and instantly know that something is missing.....then that causes a diversion to go find it.

Ron, nice pic of the moon. I am surprised at the detail that gets captured! I am glad that the cranes hang around for entertainment!

Drew, I usually have a continuous list of "new tools needed" to replace old worn out ones. When I sold off all my big shop tools years ago, I also sold most of the heavier professional tools, thinking "I won't need that..." only to find that I do.... I know what you are going through....

When it comes to the 'cordless' nailers, I never liked them. When they first came out, they were propane driven with a little cartridge for the gas. I thought they were just too big and bulky. I have recently eyeballed and handled some of the battery ones, and they still seem that way. The little 18g brad nailer I have weighs around 12 ounces.... easy on the hand and wrist....

Today will include some more shop time to finish the drop leaf top, putting the edge band around it... last of the gluing.... I will do that first, while it is drying, go to the hardware store and get the hinges needed to mount it (still didn't get 'round to it)....

Everyone have an enjoyable day!

   / Good morning!!!! #122,258
Oh, I forgot to mention.....
yesterday I moved the old freezer out to the shop and started "boxing" it up for storage. I was very proud of my boxing skills.... cut the foam packing materials from the new one down to size, cut the cardboard / box down to fit, taped it all like it was new....

Only to find that it was 2" too big to go up the pull-down stairs up into the storage loft! NUTS! Now I have to figure out a spot in the shop where I can store it.... more rearranging.... I need a bigger shop! .... I have a plan to add an addition on, but not at today's building materials cost... hopefully they will come down by spring or next summer....

71°F and 1.79 inches rain. Looking like it might be another wet one.

That might make it a good day to watch football.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day
