100-mph Tesla Model 3 crash sent hundreds of scorching battery cells flying, started a fire in a house, and took 3 hours to clean up

Business Insider|6 hours ago

The crash obliterated the Tesla Model 3 and launched hundreds of hot battery cells around the neighborhood, the Corvallis Police Department said.

Ooopppsss....

Wow that drives home the Don't Drink and Drive.

I wish my wife and daughter had been in a Tesla Model 3 two weeks ago when a Toyota van ran a red light in 35 MPH speed zone.instead of our Nissan Leaf.

While Tesla seems to be the safest production car on the road today it is good they are moving away from using the bolt in traditional battery packs will the event of 4680 cells.

While Tesla is by far the most valuable auto maker in the world today stories like this is going help keep them on top.

Thanks for sharing this awesome story. Now I need to find rear-ended Leaf so the son and I can work to untotal my 2016 Nissan Leaf SL and start saving for a Model Y Tesla.

Time to buy Autozone stock? Can't get junkyard parts, have to buy new Chinese parts.
FYI the clunkers aren't parted out - melted down
Poor get poorer when they can't find 'good' used cars

yep part of the clunkers law was really stupid , junkyards could not pull low mile engines and transmissions and sell them to replace an engine burning oil or a toasted transmission.

^^ That was the point of it. To get the guzzlers off the road, not to repair other guzzlers. It was a decent idea, but extremely poorly thought out and implemented. There were a boatload of decent, restorable classics wiped out. Not the running, ready for show ones obviously, but one that COULD have been made show ready. I can think of a few 70s and 80s cars I'd like to have right now, but none are available (or are overpriced ), partially due to that program.

Typical press spin: This is Tesla's fault and not the driver who hit a utility pole at 100+ MPH.

All batteries will be bolted in. What do you expect, welded? Tesla has always welded cells together to form the battery module. The welded leads are of a calibrated gauge to carry the load but break (fuse) on overload.

Tesla batteries are built of modules with independent controllers, multiple modules comprise a "battery". The battery cells are submersed in coolant in a sealed metal assembly that takes the entirety of the car's underbelly, in exact same places many conventional vehicles put gasoline tanks. Get belly ripped out running over a post at 100 MPH and there is no surprise parts go flying but it takes a special cognitive dissonance to pretend anything different would have occurred with a gas tank. And just think how much fun there would have been with a hydrogen tank!

So rather than 10+ gallons of flaming gasoline spraying the house we have an attempt at creating hysteria about 2 cells (out of 4000+) from the battery flying through the windows of a house, one smoldering on a bed. The cell is 21x70 cm.

Three whole hours to clean up! Really? Only three hours? Had this been a gasoline fire one would have spent much longer cleaning up.

While Tesla is by far the most valuable auto maker in the world today stories like this is going help keep them on top.

The public is getting used to media sensationalism.

Didn’t consumer report just list Tesla as one of the most unsafe vehicles?

Tesla per Elon is moving away from module format with the 4680 with no battery packs. Cells will go in casting which will be part of the frame.

15 Cadillac Dealers Accept Buyouts Rather Than Tool up for Electric Models: Report - TheStreet

Since Cadillac plans to move to only EV sales by 2030 about 150 dealerships have decided to close shop. For old line car makers to make it going forward business as usual may not cut.

Sounds like VW is willing to compete with Tesla in the $25K EV market.

.

First of many.

Modern dealerships (to date) have required huge capital commitments by the principal. Parts and Service departments both provide good revenue streams with IC engines. Take that away, and the margins made on selling even luxury vehicles often won't be enough for an independent dealer to keep the doors open.

Not hard to imagine that the ones left standing will all be factory owned.

It amazes me that Elon Musk pulled off doing this with the small 1850 cells 15 years ago.
Yes, I visited the first facility on business when they were building the first prototypes. I was shocked to see the crude taped up battery packs. But I was very impressed at how quick and quiet it was... actually hard to believe at the time.

Another company where I had an inside peek and didn't buy their stock! :mur:

2016 Leaf strip.jpg

This is our 2016 Nissan Leaf SL after a guy ran a red light and Austin and I removed optional parts. We took it for two mile run getting it up to 68 MPH and it ran and handled fine thankfully and shows no sign of frame involvement thankfully. The 18 year old guy running the red light sheared 18 inches off of the nose missing the tires by about 6 inches.

For one that has not seen a stripped down Leaf what you are looking at the charger/inverter/motor stack top down. We are looking for a 2014-2017 car for parts with good front airbags, seat belts and windshield. The passenger air bag got the windshield. The the daughter was driving her Mom to work when I happened. I had been out at the son's place doing some backhoe work. The daughter got some whiplash and airbag and seat belt injured the wife but she has been told she will have pain for 6-8 weeks and she is in less pain now at week four.

I am glad they did not get T-boned but the impact was in the rear right door of the Toyota van and it landed upside down siding about 200 feet. It was a close call for all parties. I am glad it happened in a 35 MPH zone. The daughter had just taken off after the light turned green.

Yep, CFC made a mess of the market for decent, cheap used cars and it's still not back to where it was.
That has hurt thousands of people who could previously afford to buy a halfway decent used car, but now have a much harder time doing so.

That is part of the joke. When this satire came out M-B had just announced the A-Class series in the USA. I remember attending local dealer 's unveiling and could barely get in/out of the A. Driver's position was smaller than a Toyota Yaris. M-B had gone insane.

My 2013 Tesla Model S 85 uses over (7100) 18650 cells. These are 18mm in diameter, 65.0mm in length. Like a tall C cell.

New tech to make a 2 speed transmissions for EVs

Best Part can be shifted under power a very efficient design.

I could see this working for a new design Power Shift Tractor ( if it can be made tough enough) by stacking units and adding a clutch or planetary gear.

Design & Engineering Insights: New Inmotive Two-Speed Transmission Improves EV Efficiency - YouTube

Inmotive Introduces World's Most Efficient Two-Speed Transmission for Electric Vehicles

Tesla initially offered a 2 speed gear box. As the guy states the current fixed speed in cars today works just fine. I was reading about an electric semi truck with a 2 speed gearbox. Going less powerful motor and battery wise adding a chain drive with articulating parts to save upfront cost is a different way of looking at things.
