Gale hope your family recovers quickly.

Was the Leaf totaled? Is the battery pack salvageable? The battery pack (or part of it) would make a really nice battery pack in a golf cart.
A look inside Nissan Leaf lithium battery pack

Thanks for all the best wishes.
It just happened late yesterday and I was done for when I got off of the backhoe and was at the accident 20 minutes later.y hands were shaking too much to use the phone to get photos so our son got 5 shots on my phone. The van shaved 1 foot off the nose and set off the front airbags when the Leaf tagged mini van in right rear door when it ran the red light. Contact was well in front of front tires even. The radiator and condenser are still in place but deformed. I think motor , heat pump, inverter charger were never touched. The battery is rear of the front tires and in front of the rear wheels. Hood shot but front fenders could be worked out. All front lights were in the street. All 5 doors open and seem to fit fine.

2020 7 Nov leaf photo 1.jpg

This shows the impact point on our 2016 Leaf SL as it hit the red van in right rear door as the van ran a red light.

The van flipped on to its top and in the photo you can see the tow truck that flipped the van back on its tires. Our Leaf rolled on through the intersection after the impact. It seems when the airbags deploy it shifts to N and hard locks out D and R usage.

I really want some Tesla FSD equipped vehicles.

Is that rebuildable? If not, it should have huge salvage value. On to a Tesla?

It can be rebuilt I expect and most likely will be totaled because insurance carriers do not like open claims and paying for rentals. I will ask if they would provide an EV rental in this case. I am guessing if a Tesla owner was insured through Tesla that you would get a Tesla loaner. :)

Other than the windshield and air bags it should be mainly a wrenching job if I can find the same trim and color car for parts. If we do it ourselves (EV repair training for my son and me) we will do it in one of the bays in his shop. The one man body shop that I like is about a mile up the road from his shop.

After the adjuster gets finished doing her thing we need to figure out how to unlock the Drive and Reverse function so we can trailer it.

Clearly I want 2-3 vehicles from Tesla with FSD enabled to help prevent accidents like this in the future. If I had the money to do that I would not have a Leaf today. :(

That is a good case study where that would have helped.

Golly, based on Internet Lore your LEAF should have immediately burst into 5000°F flames!

Perhaps it is time to schedule a Tesla test drive. If you buy please use me as a reference. You get 1,000 miles free Supercharging and my name goes in the pot for a monthly drawing for a Model Y. http://ts.la/david6536

Not sure I understand the situation to know whether FSD would have helped. Predictive braking is expected to be standard feature on all new automobiles in 2022. My 2016 Subaru Outback with Eyesight has it.

I am not sure either but since it was a van closing fast at a right angle I think it may have picked it up. On the upside my wife now knows about FSD possibilities. :)

My insurance agency called me and he agreed for the van to travel that far after the impact and still had the energy to flip upside down that it was going faster than 35 MPH most likely. Had daughter gone another 4 foot before the impact she and her mom would be in a world of hurt today I expect. The nose cap was 100 feet farther south than the Leaf.

Biden Climate Plan Includes Cash for Clunkers to Speed EV Adoption

I think most expected something like this. I guess it will be good marketing for EV sales and jack up used car prices as a side effect. There is talk of making the $7000 rebate active again with no 200,000 EV sales limits that cut off that discount for Tesla buyers.

Time to buy Autozone stock? Can't get junkyard parts, have to buy new Chinese parts.
FYI the clunkers aren't parted out - melted down
Poor get poorer when they can't find 'good' used cars

Wow, the picture shows there was alot of energy in that collision, glad everybody is walking and talking.

The source of the energy boggles my mind. Eye witnesses indicate the 2006 Toyota Sienna van left the intersection sliding on its left side then crossed the entire road . Some how it was able to continue and roll into it's roof making for a 180 degree roll after the impact. That is a lot of energy for a van estimated to be going 30-35 MPH.

Is nothing but pandering with other people's money. The previous Cash For Clunkers was an environmental disaster. No wonder Biden thinks it is a good idea.

Nobody needs an EV tax credit. If the EV requires a subsidy then it is creating extra consumption. If the EV saves resources then it saves money then it justifies its expense. Or it doesn't.

When the original EV tax credit was enacted Tesla promptly increased price of the Roadster by $7,000. Consumers never benefit from the tax credit, it always goes straight back to the manufacturer.

When Toyota ran out of the $3750 hybrid credit they had to revert to manufacturer's rebates in 2007. Again, the tax credit goes to the manufacturer, not the consumer no matter the consumer is the middleman who has to float the capital until the end of the year tax return.

Put $100 extra in someone's pocket for doing something "green" and you have no expectation of him doing anything better than buying $100 of diesel for his pre-emissions tractor. Or buying airline tickets for a skiing trip. Or any of the multitude of things Al Gore is known for.

Reminds me of the ruler that was told that the people have no bread to eat, and his response was , so let them eat cake. Maybe things haven't changed much. People really get the government they deserve I guess.
