I may have misunderstood the topic when I posted my post.

I have always cross chained my trailer to vehicle chains, but have never cross chained my tie down chains, may have been the reason I misunderstood the topic.

That doesn't make your point any less valid.

Very good info.
The "more" correct way is cross chain and point to point. So you would need 4 straps. On a vehicle when chaining to the frame that is the best way i have found to keep it secure in the middle of the trailer. If I am going a long ways and or over on bumpy roads that is how I do it. In his case he could do it with another chain and he would need 4 load binders. Then i believe you would not have to cross over under vehicle like others are concerned. He can do this because cloves is on his vehicle. That is how I do it.
I don't do it that way every time and i said consider.
I believe that is the way we chained trucks when they where on the MPS ships and cargo planes. That is where i got it from anyway. It has served me will over the years. Everything is pre-marked so it is not hard. That is just a matter of a couple different cans of spray paint and painting chain links when it is chained down correctly.

Don't twist chains to shorten them. A slight twist, so the links make a gentle spiral pattern doesn't make much difference. Severe twisting to shorten reduced strength 70% in this test.

What’s the reduction in strength for dragging them on the ground?

Can you explain that better --I don't quite understand.

I've always hauled with four chains and four binders and tied down corner to corner. Four, 10 ft chains with a safety hook on one end and the other to the trailer pocket. Sometimes chains in back and straps with safety hook up front. In decades, I don't think I ever had anything move 1/4 inch. It holds like glue and seems the easiest for me. I only haul up to maybe 10,500 lbs.

My stress has been largely related to 40 years using Skoal, Copenhagen and Grizzley tobacco, my wife almost died of bacterial meningitis January 2020, while living in the hospital I stopped dipping but I have vocal cord erosion that hurts like an ulcer in my esophagus (from acid reflux) and a tumor in the left side of the neck that is yet to be determined what the heck it is. So pile up a 27 year marriage almost ending and now dealing with (luckily) mild brain damage and thinking that I may die of stuff inflicted stupid while the company I work for (Western Pa. Nuclear power plant) is nearly shutting down. Yeah, I'm stressed. All I need to do is get Dana stabilized and secure, then live forever or die fast while I'm still under the 1.25 million policy of my employer. I'm literally worth way more dead than alive, but I still need to get her past this crap show. After that, take me Lord. I'm ready to come home.

Rock, so sorry to hear about all of this. For me, and probably the vast majority of folks reading this, it puts our little stresses in perspective. What you have gone through and continue to go through is heartbreaking. Wishing you healing for your wife and yourself. Dave

I misunderstood too. I thought were referring to crossing the load. I thought everyone crossed the hitch.

The violation I see is the loader and backhoe are not tied down. All attachments must be tied down separately or pined in place to prevent movement. This all started due to large excavators taking out bridges. Now the tickets start to fly for any backhoe or loader that is not tied to the deck.

This is where to find all the rules.

Total weight of the B2650 unit is under 5,000 lb, 10,000 lb requires the individual accessories attached to the unit to be chained as well.

That is my understanding as well. However, at a scale in California a couple of years ago, I was told by an officer to put a chain over the front loader and the backhoe bucket on a 5000'ish lb small backhoe. Not sure if he was being a little overzealous on rule enforcement or not, but I did as he said. It really isn't clear to me. And I suspect if you asked several officers you might get a couple of different answers.

^^^ This is my experience... the regs fill volumes and often require specialists... just ask about child safety seats and booster seats.

Some of the old car guys run into this too.

The front loader bucket and backhoe buckets are classed as separate accessories therefore they have to be tied down separately irregardless of the weight of the tractor.
The tractor itself only needs 2 tie downs.

Annnndddd...today's winner. Photo sent by a friend locally here. He didn't get a pic from the side but said it was riding super low. Points for creativity on loading, for sure!

Meh, 900-1500# of side by side plus a push mower shouldn't be a big deal for most trucks.

Can someone tell me what the SxS winch line is attached to/securing?
The mower sitting on the hitch mount platform? I don't see a problem with that. The mower is secured.
