Your 80% requirement is overkill, more in line with FLA maybe, the 30% more reasonable. Sure you could tweak it up to 35 or 40%. You might want to ask battery manufacturer for their recommendations as there might be the possibility to damage them if not allowed to fall below 80%.

Agreed, but the scenario I'm worried about is the generator not starting in the face of an approaching wildfire. I want to know about it while I've still got some battery power left, not when they're on their last legs.

About 3PM today I got a call from a friend alerting me to the Bear Fire, which had been burning south of Quincy for the past week or so, but had been fanned by the days high winds and spread rapidly toward Oroville. This is what I saw then I looked to my east:

At that point, the head of the fire was about 15 miles away, and moving to the southwest.

Two hours later:

Since then I've been watching as more and more areas to the south and east are evacuated; the northern most zone is only about a mile to my east. The wind continues to blow from the northeast, carrying the flames in the direction of Oroville. Speeds are in the 30+ MPH range over the fire. The town and points south are now under an Evacuation Warning.

This is a link to the fire map. Clicking on the "Fire Activity" and "Wind Plot" checkboxes in the right hand menu area will show the fire's current location and the most likely direction of spread.

It's close enough now I can hear the whump of exploding propane tanks, evoking bad memories of the Camp Fire. I have my Nomex laid out, along with gloves, boots, and mask, hopefully they won't be needed. I had the firetruck running earlier, but was unable to build enough water pressure to make much of a difference, so it's garden hoses to the rescue should the need arise. And the sprinklers along the roof. My neighbors are awake and passing along what they know, which right now isn't much. All of us are hoping for daylight and steadily decreasing winds holding from the northwest.

Good morning from north central Florida. Muggy today, muggy tommorow, muggy and still muggier till October with a definite chance of mosquitoes and love bugs.
We have recently moved (a week ago) to 3 aceres but no shop or barn. Still unpacking, had some cross fencing done. Working on a small barn for wifie's 2 minis and a 16x24 shop for me. Both will be "tin sheds".

Welcome Chuck! Nice to have you here. As much as I think it's humid/muggy here in coastal NC, it was nothing compared to Florida, lived aboard my boat with wife for three years North of Miami. Sometimes it was almost hard to breathe. Hope your unpacking and reorganization goes well.

now they have changed weather forecast for much more rain, up to two inches today. Going for a walk shortly before the heavens open up.

Wx never cooperated for any mowing this morning, but afternoon proved perfect to pick up newest family member.

Meet Makani, 7 week old boxer. Same breeder but different parents as Kekoa. He arrived about 3:30 this afternoon after short hop from Oahu. Did well at initial vet check, got shots. 5.7 lbs.

Most animated I致e seen Kekoa since Kalani passed. His little nub has barely stopped. Good to see. Simba, the cat, still processing, keeping his distance.

Good morning. A slightly unexpected and very wet mist closed in on us at daybreak. It nicely kept me cool as I walked my last zig zags across the far hay field, pulling yet more ragwort. Getting too late in the year for hay, but with a bit of luck the weather over these next few days will at least allow friends to make some sileage of it for their cattle.

I got a bit lost over what a "barn quilt" is, I was expecting to see stitching on fabrics depicting images of old barns. Instead the links show many barns painted with images of flags ? :confused2: That rock painting is excellent.

RNG, hope the fires die down and morning brings nothing more than an opportunity to review the checklist.

Sodamo, very cute looking pup. So you named him after an Hawaiian word for "wind" ? Good choice - "flatulence", although often accurate, would have been a cruel name for any dog :thumbsup:

Jim, learning to tie flies could be fun. Instead of buying materials from an online catalogue, I wonder if it would be possible to catch fish on flies tied only with materials I find in the fields. Thanks to Mr Fox, there is always a plentiful supply of feathers from a wide variety of birds and waterfowl, no shortage of wool and even thin shiny plastic could be thought of as a naturally occurring resource the next time someone's helium filled birthday balloon falls out of the sky.

Drinking first cup of coffee. 54 °F with cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 72 °F with cloudy skies. Ended up with little over 1/2" of rain. Got house cleaned up. Laundry done and put away. Found another paint job to do. Bottom panel on garage doors needs leaning painting. Seeing spots of rust. Going to have to wait for dryer weather. Garden pond maintenance today. Then a trip to Menards to pickup a order. Taxes are due on house. Might as well get it paid while out.
Thanks everyone for help on the binder post. Saved me making over 20 of them. Making 1 or 2 is OK. Making more than that is boring.
Not a lot of wildlife action here lately. So it's flower from my neighbors yard. Wish I knew name all of these flowers. I need to do some more Drone pictures.

Wngsprd, I follow a Facebook page for Michigan Old Barns. Lots of them have Quilts on them. I have been thinking about putting one on end of my barn. I plan to do one of the tours this fall in Michigan thumb.

Ron, will those binder posts need to support much weight or torque loads? Thinking those we've seen here are not made of strong metal, nor do they need to to hold
scrapbooks and picture albums together.

went for my walk, met several of the neighbors out walking their dogs, all of us looking at the sky and knowing this was the time to be outside.
Came back and vacuumed the rv, that takes all of five minutes...and now going to make some breakfast.
Lady with an apartment in PA is calling me at 9am, nice place over garage but she wants to rent it furnished and it's just cram packed with artsy fartsy stuff in there,
which makes sense since she was renting apartment as a B&B on a daily rate to NYC folks coming down for weekend. Just not a good fit for me and I emailed her and said she would have to get all her stuff out of there, I needed a place to feel like home. And her couch which is in the shape of a hand is just not "me"... May be a square peg in round hole but she is nice and am curious what her response will be. Apartment looks out over Lake Nockamixon, gorgeous location, property has pool, tennis court, her late husband was a doc and clearly they could afford what they wanted. I may not rent from her but maybe she'll be a new friend.

Use Stihl brush cutter to cut down weeds in west circle (another planting area for more hosta ... :laughing

Rake up straw around lower catch basin, possibly reseed bare spots if any.

Check southeast planting bed to see how much damage there from erosion with the last rains, likely to be significant ...

Mow down around the house later this afternoon.

Refill bird feeders.

Plant more hosta.

Not necessarily in that order ...

Good Morning!!!! 82F @ 5:00AM. Some clouds this morning will give way to generally sunny skies for the afternoon. Areas of smoke and haze are possible, reducing visibility at times. High around 95F. Winds light and variable.
Stuck my head out the door a little while ago and could see lots of ash swirling around in my flashlight beam. The smell of smoke is also strong.

The fire is continuing to burn to the southeast of here, but is also spreading in a northerly direction in a way that the wind could carry it here. The wind has dropped a bit since last night, but the Red Flag Warning and its winds won't die until 5PM. By 10AM or so it'll start rotating around to the south, and then the west, perhaps blowing the fire back into its track and slowing it down some. One can hope. Still hearing what sounds like exploding propane tanks off in the distance. Waiting for daylight has been difficult.

What a cute little bundle of brindle, David. Glad Eric didn't get to pick his name.:laughing: Glad the back's feeling better, but it'll be harder than ever to keep from overworking it.

Drew, that is a nice area, I used to fish at Lake Nockamixon almost weekly when we lived outside of Perkasie. I am sure that area has changed .....

The agenda this morning will be the "dog grooming shuttle". First Kassie will get her hair done, when she is ready to be picked up, Max will take the return trip for his shave and haircut....

It will probably be too cold to get out into the shop today, so not sure what else I will get into....
