Yesterday\'s visitor

So I'm looking out the bedroom window yesterday and I see my dogs in the backyard going nuts, jumping, barking and dancing around this "thing." Ridgebacks ain't the brightest of the hound group, so I go check it out. Here's a pic.

Pretty nice pics!

Next time, lay a common object close by so we can get an idea how big she is...I'd love to know. I saw one this summer whose head had to be as big as a volleyball. I could have swore it was a sea turtle, but those are few and far between in Lake Erie. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

coach; In the lake proper, right. But you should the monsters we get in the marshes at this end of the lake. I've seen them large enough to fill one of those old galvanized wash tubs , the neck was as large as my lower leg is around. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Those snappers only get out about like that for two reasons, mateing or to find a new pond. They are generally at the top of a small food chain.

My small pond has a resident snapper and the only time I've seen him out was when it dried up. After I dug it out and the rains filled it back up, either he came back home or another took up residence.

They are supposed to be good eat'n. I've heard that theres something like 7 different textures of meat in 'em.

This lil' monster was about 10 -- 12" from the front to the back of its shell. I didn't feel like getting close enough to take a precise measurement -- I value my digits way too much for that. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif My neighbor kept telling me to pick it up by its tail. No way. That's a sure way to lose a finger.

They're delicious.

This reminds me of the time I was warned of a visitor. We have 2 Blue and Gold Macaws and they're outside as much as the weather allows. One afternoon while watching TV, I heard them start screaming and yelling. Went to the backdoor to see this about 30 feet from them.

I will bring back this old thread with photos of the visitor we had yesterday when I went out to get the mail at our box on the River Road. He was 8 feet long but too cranky. He did bite a piece of 3/4" emt and smash it. We managed to lasso his nose and dragged him up the levee and turned him loose by the Mississippi River which is where I am sure he came from. One of my neighbors down the road had a 6' one in his fish pond last week. They are everywhere here but they are not as bad as the Florida alligators because they are so well fed here. Louisiana has more alligators than the other 49 states put together.

Surprisingly, those 15 YO photos are still available.

I've seen black bears like some of those shown above; yet alligators haven't moved this far north yet.

My wife would never live there... I love Louisiana, beautiful state for sure. Fell in love with St Francisville.

I remember having one longer than my S-10 pick up come walking up outta the swamp one evening long ago.
They're pretty impressive beasts. Until you see them in the wild.
Then, words like terror come to mind when the bull is 6" from the truck.
