Tractor Sizing Subcompact with Backhoe, or Compact without.

I owned a BX for 10 years and traded it for JD2025r a little over a year ago. The BX was a great tractor but the larger size is nice. The small end loader bucket frustrated me at times with the BX. I’d like to have a backhoe but don’t need one. You might look at a 2 series JD or a B series Kubota. They are in between in size of a BX and a L size.

For 3 acres, SCUT with a BH. Wouldn’t buy a machine without one.

I hadn't really thought about buying the backhoe later.

When you buy a Backhoe as part of a new 'L' tractor purchase and if you are a reasonably canny negotiator, the Backhoe will cost ~~ $4,000~~within your tractor order.

As a later addition the same Backhoe will cost you $7,000 as Kubota never discounts the aftermarket price.

^^^^^^ EXACTLY CORRECT !!!!!
A delayed backhoe purchase will waste BIG BUCKS !!

There are certain hydraulics needed for a backhoe that can cost more to add later also.

With that said, do you think I'll be ok removing stumps/trees with a BX/1 series sized backhoe? I've been quoted ~$30k for an l2501 TLB and I $21k for a bx23s. Unfortunately I can't justify the extra expense of the L right now since I'm building my new home and every time I turn around it costs me another $5k.

I can't see myself trying anything over 6-8". Like I said, my neighbor has a full sized backhoe and he's happy to remove my big stumps in exchange for the firewood that I produce while clearing. But, if I spend the extra cash on a backhoe, I want it to be useful for the majority of my clearing which is
Trees less than 6" diameter. Mostly cherry, walnut, and Autumn Olive. Some Osage Orange mixed in, but I don't expect to buy a machine that can handle that.

Well, as those pictures show, 10-12 inch stumps aren't really an issue. I've taken out another 20 or so smaller ones.
