Latest Windows 10 Update

Just got the invoice from my cousin for 'fixing' my Dell 5000 laptop. $1356.25. Nice to be family isn't it? Took them 8 hours to reload and remove the offending update.

No more updates for me. I'll let them update it so when it screws up, they can deal with it and I won't have to shell out the funds again.

This is insane! It sounds like your cousin has ransomware on your computer, charging those rates to disable it. 8 hours to remove and reload, ok, but do they charge while it's sitting there doing it's thing and they work on 6 other systems?

I have no idea what 5030 uses his computer for, that said it has been several years since I had to really mess with computers but back then it could be a nightmare.
When I was programing PLC's (programmable logic controllers) every vendor had their own programming software which had to be installed on your computer to program and operate their system and as they migrated from ladder logic to flow programming to graphical interfaces it actually got so bad with incompatibility that it was almost cheaper to have a different computer for each manufactures software otherwise you were constantly uninstalling and reinstalling software and communication drivers. Many times you would even need different versions of a manufactures software to be able to work on all the different systems that were used.
At times using multiple hard drives and different operating systems and multiple boot programs to try and have multiple operating systems on one computer.
At times it made a person wish for the "old" days when you had to have a dedicated board in your computer for every different brand to interface and communicate with the different PLC's.

If a PC or laptop is running some various industrial or commercial programs for specific uses it would be quite easy to have a difficult and expensive installation process.

As far as printers I have had very good luck with my Brother printers, much better then my different HP's over the years, although my old HP plotter was a solid work horse in it's day slow but good, I can recall starting a print job at lunch going out in the shop and working all afternoon with occasional visits to check on the progress and then leaving for the night with it still clicking away.

I use it for my .com website actually. Not that I'm doing anything right now because with the virus and being a 'non essential' business, I'm shut down. I also use it to run my CnC plasma table when it's not on the desk. It's very fancy, lots of gizmo's. Interfaces with the Cnc Mills and tracer lathes as well.

I don't think the price is out of line in as much as it needed a complete reload of everything after the update gave it a brain fart. At least all the data was intact on my external solid state hard drive.

it's best to wait for feedback from other users in case an update is faulty, Google the KB number of the update!..

My laptop has some very expensive and complex features and I can utilize it for this stuff and running my CnC equipment and as well as my plasma table so one laptop takes the place of at least 3 units, possibly 4. I don't do cheap or refurbished anyway. Not into second hand stuff, which 'refurbished' is the nice term for.

I don't think so. No ransomware on this laptop. My cousin is a highly respected IT in the software field. He writes and executes some very complex programs for law enforcement agencies. I can afford it. If I couldn't, I would have a cheapo unit with limited capabilities. I don't. Besides, it's a business write off. Just the 3 Terabyte SSD chipset was expensive alone, not counting the 2 Terabyte external backup SSD and the optical drive and the card reader and the facial recognition hardware and software and a pile of other stuff. Only thing it lacks is enough serial ports. I had to add an external splitter to increase the port capability. I need a minimum of 4 serial ports available.

I've had good luck with used HP ProBooks. (business class laptops). I think they were around $1,500 new. $250 used.

I have a friend who bids government surplus auctions. In a batch of laptops there will always be a few that show no wear at all, likely issued to managers who never traveled or something.

Of the three we have in use and over the five years since I bought the first one, I replaced one keyboard. NBD, that model has alternate keyboards for export so it takes just 5 minutes to remove/replace its KB - which was $25 from Ebay.

I think we've gotten good value from these, much better than buying a new inexpensive model from Fry's or Best Buy. But I think it helps to visit a dealer who has several identical units and pay a little more for the one that looks best. Used business gear is generally good quality.
