I run 2 Brother's. A MFC J8700 and a 1960C Intellefax. Both are flawless and have been for years. What I like best is how inexpensive the cartridges are for them and , unlike the Cannon Printers, they don't 'self destruct' when the cleaning tank becomes full of old ink. It never gets full because they pump the cleaned ink back into the cartridges.

The Cannon's will default to a 'no print' condition when the used ink tank is full. Pre-planned life.

Lots of all-in-one printers at BestBuy for less than $100. Not worth any more effort on trying to get the great HP to work. Will donate the Brother to JABA (Jefferson Board for Aging). Have an Epson all-in-one at the VCE office: not user friendly.

I'll get another HP because it's so much easier to use. BestBuy had quite a few choices of them.

For printers, go the to the vendor support website and see if there is a Windows 10 driver package. Often the old printer won't be in Windows, but the vendor has it. I am using a Officejet 5610 (something like 15+ years old) on my Windows 10 Pro 64 bit version. Works fine for printing and scanning.

Was it this driver on the HP site? It says it's recommended for Windows10: HP Photosmart C31 All-in-One Printer series Software and Driver Downloads | HP(R) Customer Support

Yep. I just erased everything HP yesterday and reloaded with this. Didn't work. Gotta buy a new printer. This HP is one we bought at an estate sale. So, it's old but worked great. MUCH more user friendly than the Brother I had and hated and never used and the Epson Workforce monster we have at the extension office that we can never get to work. I'll buy another HP but I had all the stuff they put on your computer.

Years ago, it was much more difficult to install and maintain Ubuntu, but now it is pretty straight forward and automatic. You can even try Ubuntu by creating a bootable thumb drive or DVD without altering your Windows installation.

I also only use the Long Term releases. Ubuntu releases new versions with major changes every 6(?) months. For someone that likes the latest, that is OK. For me, I like stability. Ubuntu comes out with a new long term release every 3 years and I believe they continue support for each long term release for an additional 3 years. So, I usually wait until the latest long term release has been out for 9-12 months to work out the kinks before I install it. The long term releases incorporate all of the good stuff that was developed since the last long term release.

My suggestion is to take another look at it.
I don't want to work the kinks out of Linux updates to stay on top of security fixes. I want someone else to take care of it. It is why I run Windows. If I wanted to spend a lot of money I would switch to Apple but I am cheap so I run Windows.

I'm with you. I've tried to like Linux, and have experimented with it many times over the years and keep coming to the same conclusion; it's too clunky and obtuse. There are so many different variations on Linux, all of which have fan bases that claim theirs is "the best". There just seems to be so much stuff you need to know that isn't obvious in order to do anything but the most basic stuff. Even installing a program can be a chore.
I like the idea of a "free" operating system, but I've become convinced that it's worth just about what it costs. I suppose if you're a tech geek and want to jump thru all the hoops to get it running it's OK, but I can't be bothered.

That having been said, I can't always say I "like" Windows either, just that it's the least annoying of the bunch, though Win 10 seems to push the limits. Never warmed up to Macs.

I had one Epson, was the biggest POC I've ever had, won't buy another.
HP makes decent enough printers, but (unless something's changed) they don't always update drivers for new OSs. Had to toss a perfectly good Laserjet when I got a Win7 machine maybe 10 years ago because they wouldn't do new drivers for it.

Got a Brother now, the software is a bit non-intuitive but I've had no problems with it otherwise.

Bought an HP OJ3830 printer at BestBuy. Still same problem: printer works in copy mode but will not print from any Windows 10 software.

Going through uninstall yet again (about 4th time). Will install in compatibility mode now.

Oh, also have not had any sound since the Win 10 last update. No bother. Usually cannot understand it anyway. Gotta have captions.

Grrrrrr! If I had enough hair, it'd all be pulled out. Trying reinstall now with the USB connected. Tried this once, but not in compatibility mode.

It sounds like you have something else going on with your system. Have you tried running the repair or diagnostic tools? Maybe one of your updates was interrupted or is corrupt.
My system had a large Windows update yesterday which took about an hour. I checked my dad's system checking for updates while I was there, and installed the same update. No issues before or after either one.

Sometimes I can truly say “life is good”....
Woke up early and got up early. Decided to get on line in other room on PC rather than on “smart phone”. Turned on PC, got coffee but screen said “windows updating. Do not turn off computer. So I waited ... drank coffee and waited. And waited. No notice of percent complete. So I waited. Now I panicked and cursed. Got my phone and checked in to TBN while watching my pc screen.
Wa la! First thread was on Win 10 update issues. While continuing to watch pc screen, I read the entire thread. About that time pc screen now showed 18% complete!
Wa la... one more time. So I got 2nd coffee. Drank it. Eventually update finished and Windows 10 home edition ( I guess and it was a free download) finally came up.
One hour later everything was finished... so I shared this reply.
Have a great day!

Sometimes I have had to go into device manager and remove items before something would work. I remove offending items, then reboot, then try setup again.

Think my BIOS got screwed by the Windows 10 update. Immediately after the update, the computer would not restart: saying hard drive failure. I fussed with it and got it going. Think the update f____d the BIOS. When you go online about loss of audio, they say the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is the problem. This coupled with the printer problem tells me it is the BIOS. Can send files via email to my iPad to substitute for little bit of printing I need. Gives me a portable "piece of paper" with what I need. Will hobble along this way until I get my next master gardener newsletter out the 15th to about the 18th. May set up an appointment with some computer people we used 6 months or so ago to fix my wife's Outlook on her computer. Don't think I want to tackle a BIOS fix. Falls into the same territory as messing with that other computer file (forgotten its name) written in computer language.

I tried all sorts of things last night and this morning short of going into the BIOS. New printer just won't go. It prints if you want to make a copy, just like the old one will.

Decided to find the new printer from my iPad. Found it from a couple of them and even printed a test pg. wanted $ to print other stuff. Deleted them. Found a free one called e-print. Weirdly, iOS 13 has no built in print. Anyway, I know the new printer is installed. Just will not work with my PC.

Weirdly enough, cannot see new printer from wife’s pooter. Can see hers from mine (but will not work).

Is your printer plugged into the network? Did you share the printer on your PC??

Had to “add printer” on wife’s pooter. Got it.

Also finally found print option in iPad mail: way down at the bottom of a long scroll from “reply” option. Printed out fine. Printer is fine. My pooter print is botched along with sound.

So if wifes is working you can share the printer on hers and use it from yours!!
