Michigan has had plenty of young people dying of lung failure before Covid 19. :confused3:

Anyone buying into the China virus is just feeding into the hysteria. Statistically the flu and common cold have been much worse and we never shut down the country for it.

The best thing to do is what you would normally do during flu season; wash your hands, eat healthy, and take multi vitamins.

If this virus lasts into the summer time, I wonder if mosquito's will spread it even further??
Hope not...

A doctor on a news program said NO but I for one would not want a blood transfusion from a COVID-19 patient.

I am also wondering why we are not trying to sterilize N95 masks? Instead of throwing away after each patient encounter can we throw away the mask at the end of the shift? can we spray some disenfectant on the mask after each encounter? Or maybe UV light exposure for a few seconds? Would this help the shortage?

My prospective is there is over the top better be safe than sorry when it comes to medical and the standard depends on who is inspecting.

Mentioned before our former military docs would just shake their collective heads on tossing out supplies solely because of a printed expiration date on the box where the exact same product sold to the military is sold without expiration date.

Of course the answer is liability...

The State of California had to get approval before it's warehouse of masks could be used as the stockpile of medical masks had expired.

I battled for a long time the expiration dates on cylinders of Oxygen and after years they no longer have expiration... not because of me but because Oxygen is Oxygen.

For most items proper storage is the key and not an arbitrary date printed on the box... the exceptions are generally compounds/meds.

Another concession this week... industrial masks made at the same factory as medical masks can now be used in medical settings simply by the stroke of a pen granting a waiver...

Anything medical costs more... follow the money.

At last week's meeting about strategic resources I mentioned I still have 2 old anesthesia machines that are fully functional and was told to scrap... which made everyone happy because they have ventilators... not in the fully automatic patient room style but still perform the same during surgery.

Seen a lot of changes in healthcare over the years and the biggest by far is single use disposable... everything from small vials of injectables instead of larger bottles to surgical instruments... the thought being disposable removes the human element because everything is single use opposed to reprocessing via sterilization and packaging... on a side note they sterile items are often made and packaged in China and then transported across the ocean... to my simple thinking many more hands to go through along the way to my hospital.

We reprocessed much more in the past than today... anyone that doubts this just needs to compare Hospital waste streams then and now.

Good article, I hope he is right. I do think this will blow over as well, but... I am a carpenter, not an MD...:confused3:

Why do new China virus threads keep starting? What was wrong with the old Covid-19 threads talking about coronavirus?

   / Corona Virus #6 #148
To bad the virus is gaining speed in USA and in Murray KY specifically.

Sure. And I wonder how many of those testing positive have flu like symptoms? ****, last month I had the flu and was down for 4 days. I probably would have tested positive for the China virus too.

All mass hysteria. Not buying it!

BTW, I have been surprised no medical personnel have said anything on these threads....or maybe I missed it. Are they worried? Anyone out there willing to share?

Last night I got a call from my son. He is in a serious relationship with a lady that works at a hospital in NYC. She is scared. Has been talking about leaving her job and driving to Michigan before the city goes on lockdown. Do not know enough about her to tell if she is a flake or just completely stressed out and over reacting...or she knows something.

Concern is real... and I suspect why several Docs just closed their practices and several anesthesiologist decided to take month vacations... just me thinking out loud.

We have several expectant mothers that have very real concerns and are taking many steps to reduce but except for total isolation anything else comes up short.

Our 100 seat lobby is closed... there is no sharing pens, only the patient is admitted past security... even the chairs are gone... distancing is 100% enforced except for direct care with PPE...

Every surface including door handles, water fountains etc... each phone has alcohol wipes next to it... and this happens dozens and dozens of times throughout the day in the "Public" areas... Operating Rooms and similar have always had strict protocols.

95% of surgeries cancelled... every surgery requires sign off from the top... some that went ahead were amputations due to gangrene... not something you can put off and others such as surgery to keep someone from going blind.

By and large the public has been very understanding... the hardest has been telling family they have to wait elsewhere but when explained they understand.

Understand that part of this is to divert and conserve supplies for our main ER and ICU

Because certain folks were getting rude and insulting or political, and the threads were closed. This is suppose to be a civil forum 'Rural Living'.

I really hope you are right but the knowledge base on all accounts says this isn't comparable to the flue...

Who knows, maybe you will get your chance to experience something new. If you survive, it might prove to be exhilarating and something to talk about at the Thanksgiving table.

I heard on a Chicago radio station that PPE's in some areas are already getting scarce. They did say that they are reusing masks.

Listen to Ultrarunner. He works in a hospital. His info is first-hand and is far more credible than some of the armchair theories out there.

That's actually an appropriate response/reaction ... it is terrifying.

It's weird how it's lethal for some with no pre existing conditions and mild for others. The flu is nothing like that. The scariest part is how do you know what kind of response your body will have? They need to be working 24/7 and throwing major $ at finding a treatment...and fast. We can't wait 18 months for red tape.

That’s something nobody has mentioned; this is the first time I’m aware of that the entire world is working toward a common goal. The closest we’ve ever come was the race for the moon.

Well most everybody. The 'Hoax!' bunch is still boldly unconvinced over in the 'Friendly Politics' forum. Maybe we'll outlive them.

Because certain folks were getting rude and insulting or political, and the threads were closed. This is suppose to be a civil forum 'Rural Living'.

And I am embarrassed to say I was perhaps the cause of closing one of the threads. I described an action by another member as ignorant. For that I apologize to him and TBN.

I still stand by my opinion but in retrospect I should have conveyed it in a more civil manner or kept quiet.

The necessary pieces for the capabilities to be able to do that should have already been in place at a national/nationwide level.

Infrastructure - national focus on recruitment, education, and training ... as a public health policy priority ... research capability, etc.

And, but for a lack of national political will - and funding - it could have been.

I think that Americans are about to find out that their vaulted "healthcare system" is woefully inadequate for addressing this type of a catastrophe ...

We'll have only ourselves to blame ... if that turns out to be the case.

Of course, I certainly hope it isn't the case ... since it will probably effect me ... quite personally ...
