"Those most at risk to severe developments are older than 70 and have weak immune responses. Others at risk include people with pulmonary abnormalities, chronic disease or compromised immune systems, such as cancer patients who have gone through chemotherapy treatment. Think of the coronavirus like the flu because it goes through the same process within the body. Many people contract the flu and recover with no complications."

Think the wife would be mad if I panic bought a new tractor ...lol

That's not panic it's smart. Have you ever heard of anybody getting infected riding a tractor? I'm not panicked but I am a little concerned. I heard if things get bad enough they may restrict travel. I am kind of counting on being able to get to the farm to keep from going stir crazy at home.

Chris

No, but there's quite a few stories about people finding bee nests with their tractors. Quite entertaining if you're not allergic to them.

No one said a million ventilators. They said a million respirators, as in DUST MASK.

One of us made a bad assumption. Mine came from the statement in the original thread

"Am glad they are increasing capacity to manufacture safety equipment. In the beginning someone quoted we had 150K respirators and we needed a million."

If you are correct, and my assumption of what the OP meant was incorrect, I find it hard to believe we have only 150k masks in the country. Maybe he meant "locally". BTW, the other factoid I used to support my assumption is 150k is what I read somewhere about number of ventilators; although the actual number is somewhat of a "national security" secret.

The last citation I saw on the subject was this release:

Pentagon says it will give 5 million respirators, 2,000 ventilators to Health and Human Services for virus response

People often confuse a ventilator with a mask. This is a ventilator and how it works and what it does:

https://www.thoracic.org/patients/patient-resources/resources/mechanical-ventilation.pdf

You are in deep trouble when you need a ventilator.....it is a machine to keep you alive.

That was my point in stating a million of the things would be next to useless. Who is going to monitor them? Work on the front end to control the spread is more important than mass producing stuff we cannot use once infected. Working on drugs to help mitigate the virus or find a vaccine is useful as well.

Even ramping up to build just another 150k ventilators will require another 150 1,000 bed hospitals, the staff to man them, and cost a fortune. People grasping at straws without thinking things through are not going to help. And yes, there is a cost to human life....some lives are not worth saving. I am in the high risk sector and accept it...just reality.

I thought I had read that there was a national reserve of emergency medical equipment that included 150k masks.

I read that the average age of CV-19 deaths in Italy is 79.5 and most had high blood pressure.. I wonder if it was high blood pressure that was not being treated? I heard about the malaria drug that has some promise on the CV update from Feds this morning..

Regarding N95 masks, 3M is making 35million per month, but only 5million were approved for medical. The feds got that changed very recent and now the whole 35 million are available for medical use.. other companies are stepping up, heard GM might make ventilators at some of the auto plants.

There was some talk that ACE blood pressure medicines may increase the likelihood of getting the virus. Meds ending in -pril for one.
