How does that switch control 220V? Wouldn't it just shut off one leg?

A Shop is also good for a Marriage. A little distance between you on occasion can be a good thing.

My wife enjoys that I have an all weather shop just as much as I do. She is rarely out here and doesn't stay long unless she's got a project going on in here. :D

I think the 120v lighting circuit energizes the contactor which pulls in and provides the 220v. It's just a big solenoid.

Yeah, that's how mine works.

He's using a double pole toggle wall switch. I'm not an electrician at all. I didn't know you could buy a switch like that to run a 220V air compressor motor.

Usually just an electro-magnetic contactor and is used on large motors and fans.

Well, I asked if he was using a contactor and he said no, just a wall switch. So that lead me to believe he's supplying 220V to a wall box, connecting the switch, running 220V out of the box to his compressor?? Curious to hear confirmation.

I believe it is a 220v 30 amp switch he is using. That is how I interpreted it.

I’ll shut up now because my electrical knowledge is pretty minimal.

I'm sure you are way ahead of me Terry. That's what I thought he meant as well.

In my particular case my compressor is at opposite ends of the shop from man door. I would have had to run power the length of the building twice. But in other circumstances I can see the advantage. And it saves the cost of the contactor.

The linked switch is a double pole switch, so it would shut off both sides of the 220 and he just has to have power to the air compressor go through that switch.
I plan on doing something similar, but with a crank timer type switch. I found a 2 Pole crank timer switch that will be installed in line between the panel and the air compressor and turn off the air compressor when the timer runs out.

That's a new one me too. So can you explain the crank timer a little more? I manually select a time period or program it or what? Thanks!!!
