By any chance do you guys or gals have the specs on the cylinders. I bent the rods and would like to find a cross reference to replace them.

This is about the third thread in the last week or so about this happening and not one of the posters has explained how it happened. Doesn't seem possible for this to happen so often.

Was using a grapple bucket and next thing you know both are bent.

A Grapple increases the chances of doing it. Curl the bucket forward, grab an object that's grounded or heavier than your FEL should handle, reverse the tractor. Now the resistance is trying to open the Grapple. Pull hard enough and you bend the ram from compression force.

Be real careful about putting yourself in this situation. A Grapple puts tremendous stresses on an FEL that it's not designed to handle.

If you have a good hardware or AG supply store near you might check with them. They can take the dimensions of your cylinder and order a replacement. Probably at considerably less cost than going thru Kubota

Took my Bradco backhoe stabilizer cylinder rod t5o a welding and machine shop. They had the chrome rod in stock and made one up on a lathe with the proper steps grooves, chamfers and everything , welded on to old cross head and everything. The only way to tell the difference on the two cylinders now is one had a painted section on the end and the other did not. A good machine of hydraulics shop should be able to make a new rod assembly or you can just order the rod part from Kubota see Messicks parts list.

A good hydraulic shop should be able to either be able to make new rods to go into your cylinder or be able to get you pricing on complete new ones.

Well I was just looking for the specs on the cylinders that came with that loader. Sense they are all bent up and off the tractor I have no way to get the measurements I need. I was hoping someone had the same loader as me and could just grab a couple measurement so i could fit some temporary ones to get this tractor up and running. Thanks anyway.

Sorry we couldn't help you.

X2.......adapting generic cylinders have their short comings, either in a different stroke or modify to fit. Assuming the cylinder barrel internally is ok and gland is not egged out, having someone make a new rod and a repack will get you back and running and everything will be as new again without something that looks like a Disney Mouse.

I知 assuming that you have already replaced this but because kubota wants $700 a piece for the cylinders and I did the same thing and I have spent some time looking. Here痴 what I just ordered.

Chief LD Loader Welded Cylinder: 1.75 Bore x 18 Stroke - 1 Rod Dia.

$140 each. both the retracted length and extended length or about 3/4 of an inch less than the original cylinder. Otherwise they are identical.

Back dragging with the bucket curled all the way down.

or expecting too much of an undersized machine.
i see a lot of forum members complaining that their compact tractors are unable or damaged to do the job at hand. unrealistic expectations
& then they wish they had gone bigger.
best of luck to the OP. there's a lot of good advice on the forum

Not certain if it was mentioned before, but the rod is available individually. Price will drive most to look for a complete cylinder, but it is available.

Kubota: COMP ROD 2, CYL
Part Number 7J274-64203
Vendor Kubota
Messick's Price $364.20
Stock Quantity 0
Weight 9.30 lbs

Back dragging with bucket curl cyls fully extended. The bucket grabs the dirt like a fishhook........VIOLA......bent rods

Happens all the time, most control valves do not have work port reliefs to retract them when snagging the ground.

Or expecting something between a tracked skid steer and a dozer from a compact tractor.

I dodged the bullet the other day doing just that, but I blew a hydraulic hose so only cost $60 plus one shower. Lesson larned.

I guess I really haven't done that much of that kind of work. Anything I've done so far has only been half to three quarter, so more smoothing and compressing downward, and then only in loose material I've just laid. I seem to find that using the rounded heel of the bucket does well enough for me raising it slightly to get over that last bit and smooth it down, then drive over a few times to pack.

Bent cylinder rods are not a "must replace" situation. If they are carefully bent back close to straight (using padded blocks, straight-edge, etc) the glands/seals usually have enough clearance to operate without binding. Looking at the straightened rod while using the tractor makes a continuing reminder to avoid whatever bent it.

If the rod is scratched, smooth off any high spots and fill the groove with super glue. I've done that on a friend's outrigger cylinder - stopped the leak.

True, but one must realize the rods won’t be as strong when they are bent back and may break in two pieces under the press if the tensile strength of the rod material is exceeded and bent too much, making a very dangerous situation in the repair shop. There are some that straighten them out on the machine without taking the cyl apart, but they run the risk of ruining the cyl barrel, gland and/or piston potentially rendering the cyl junk, then a trip to the dealer to lighten up the wallet to follow. If a successful straightening job is pondered, stripping the cyl down should always be considered.
Not sure super glue is the right application for hyd rod repair, Stainless Steel tig welding is what we do for a quickie fix.
