Was looking at Titans to be an everyday truck since my 2500 Ram is constantly working for my side business. Came across a few F150 with the 2.7EB. Give me some input on this please-reliability, turbo problems, towing etc.

I have a 2015 3.5L EB with 91K miles. Only think I've done is change the oil and replace one emissions solenoid on the canister. The 2.7L will have less towing capacity, but My 3.5L is rated for 12K, and I've been close. to that with it. The suspension is more of an issue with towing than the power. At the end of the production cycle, they are usually trying to move the smaller engine options really hard. Lots of rebates.

The most I will tow with this is probably 6k lbs 2-3 times a year. The Ram handles the big stuff.

You should get some good responses on here soon enough. There are several members that have posted reviews, and some are pretty impressive.

Love my 3.5. The turbos build low end torque early. Good mileage. Mine is a lease. New one coming in August. I tow heavy. Real heavy.

I have read some good reviews. The only thing giving me hesitancy is twin turbos and longevity of them.

I'm on my second 2.7 truck....and still enamored! :D

My love affair started one chilly March day back in 2015. My employer asked me to put some miles on a brand new truck, to ready it for service. Sure, sign me up! Said truck was a brand new aluminum body F150 with the brand new 2.7EB engine, crewcab 4x4 Lariat trim. Well, not knowing much about it, I thought there was some mistake with the engine size....2.7L V6 in a full size PU? What a joke! This thing will probably be a slug! Ford has lost their mind! (My last full size truck was an '88 F150 5.0L V8, had a few Rangers, and a few Honda Ridgelines in between).

Mapped out a trip through SE Ohio hill country for a weekend, worth about 500 miles. As I prepared to take the truck home that Friday eve prior, I gave it the once over....very impressive rig! Then I drove it. OMG. Nearly started off with a rear end accident, as I was not prepared for how this "little V6" would handle a 5000lb truck. I honestly don't think I stopped giggling for about 30 minutes! Felt more like a Mustang than a truck! Oh, and then I found the "Sport Mode" setting.....

Fast forward, after the weekend trip, I was hooked. I was driving a new ('16) Honda Odyssey Elite at the time, a pretty nice ride....which was dynamically outclassed in every way by a half ton 4x4 PU! Just Wow. Dumped the Honda, found a '15 F150 XLT crewcab 4x4 with the 2.7EB. Yes! Three year lease, put about 45K on it. Zero issues. Zero. Brand new design, brand new engine, ZERO issues. Ford hit a home run with this truck.

More fast forward, lease is up spring of '18, so even though I'm pretty sure I want another 2.7 F150, the new RAM is out, getting good reviews, so I owe it to myself to give it a look, as I'm not brand loyal beyond a good product. While the interior of the RAM was high quality (material, F&F), I didn't care for the layout, and the std V6 was a complete joke compared to the V6 EB F150.

So, lease #2 for a 2.7EB F150 was consumated, another crewcab XLT 4x4. Currently sitting at 21K zero issue miles, averaging 22-24mpg (not towing), and 16-18 towing my BX on a tandem flatbed(about 5K).

Yeah, I'm a big fan of these trucks. It's what I will drive until someone builds something better, which hasn't happened yet, IMO. For me, the 2.7 offers the best of everything....power, economy, refinement, & reliability, with a really nice truck wrapped around it.

That's my story, YMMV. :)

Thanks for the input. Your experience seems to match up with what others are saying. The truck I am looking at is attached. 2.7eb, 2wd, 3.31 ratio. IMG_8510.JPG

I ordered myself a new F150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost and picked it up in May of 2016. Closing in on 40,000 miles now without a single issue. Truck has never been back to the dealer for anything - I change oil and rotate the tires myself. Most impressive to me...as with all my vehicles, I keep a comprehensive log book of everything including fuel stops. An Excel spreadsheet calculates the exact fuel mileage and this truck over its lifetime is averaging 20.9 mpg - and that's where the speed limit is 80.

Anyway, you were asking about the 2.7 Ecoboost. Since I started shopping for the truck and ever since I've spent a lot of time on the Ford truck forums. The 2.7 Ecoboost has a sterling reputation, probably fewer problems than the 3.5 engine. People just seem to love them.

And quit worrying about the turbos. Your truck has them. My tractor has one and I've been driving turbodiesel trucks for many many years. Never a turbo problem. No difference between those Ecoboost turbos and the ones on the diesel trucks.

My F150 with 12,000 lb behind it.

Good luck with your search! Make sure you do thorough test drives on all final candidates. :drink:

Does the XL come with sport mode in shifter in a 16 model? Looking at this one too.

My understanding is that starting in 2015 the Sport mode capability was added to the 6 speed auto in all the F150s. Two pushes on the Tow-Haul button on the end of the shifter activates it.

Imagine if Ford had found a way to squeeze the 2.7 ecoboost into the new Ranger. The wait time for delivery would probably be about the same as for the 2020 Corvette.

I've got a 14 model 3.5 Ecoboost in an F 150, I absolutely love it. I test drove a 17 model with a 2.7 and I really liked it, from what I have heard from friends with one I wouldn't be afraid of it for what I tow. As for the turbos, thy ave been putting turbochargers on engines for 60+ years, I think they have the technology down pretty well and they aren't as problematic as people want to think they are.

I finally got to drive one yesterday, a 2015 xlt crew cab. The power was impressive. I did not try sport mode. I have 2 more to look at, will hopefully pull the trigger by Tuesday.

With my 3.5 Ecoboost I pull a 3 horse slant load trailer (about 7000 lbs fully loaded) and my tractor and loader that comes in (trailer and all) about 8500 lbs like it isn't even there. I am very happy with the engine and truck.

I got my father a 17 2.7 EB 150 4x4 a couple years ago, I have only driven it a couple times. Once was a 600 mile day to NY and back. The truck said 22mpg and I believe it was accurate. The truck never lacked for power...it it really impressive for such a little motor. The other time I was towing about 4500 pounds and it handled it like nothing. He has had no issues over the past 2 years at all. A few months back I bought a 19 F150 with the 3.5 and its a rocket.. I had 10k behind it and I was amazed at how well it handled it... Amazed... I would have had no hesitation about getting the 2.7 instead but the options and color I wanted were not available at the time so I ended up with the 3.5 , As of now that truck has 3200 miles and it's typically unloaded, I'm averaging 19.5 mpg with mixed driving.

I went out today and purchased a 2016 with the 2.7. It is a bit louder than my 2015 with the 302...but it ran very well. Many good reviews on the 2.7 so I took the chance. This will be my beater truck. It has 134k miles on it but I only plan on putting 5-8k mikes a year on it. Figure if I get 10-12 years out of it I will be happy. Paid $19.5.

Like the aluminum body. It will still look good after many years on the road.

My 16 XLT does have the sport mode.
The one I got for my father is the XL STX. It has the color matched bumpers and center console but the shifter is on the collulm. I don't think the console shift is available in the XL.
